Hi guys, I just purchased a 97 Pathfinder and everything seems to run great exect for the fact that there's this loud whining noise from 1st all the way thru 3rd gear.. mind you it only whines when it's in those gears and it's kinda faint when i'm in 3rd gear. 4th and 5th gear are smooth and quiet. I took it to my mechanic and he thinks it's the transmission bearing (it's a 5spd.) and he's asking for 500 dollars to get it fixed.

I just want to know if anyone's experienced this or would know where it could be coming from. so I don't just fork out 5 bills for nothing. I guess i'm seeking for a second opinion.

Thanks .

first try changing the fluids. if that doesnt work then it probably is your clutch release bearing but thats kind of wierd that it doesnt do it in the last two gears. so now im not sure

sry.

does it go away after a while?does it go away when u step on the clutch?if it is a transmission bearing, then there r other bearings in the transmission as well, i think the one ur mechanic is talking about is in the actual transmission, if u answer yes to the above ?s then more than likely it is, keep in mind a new clutch too, that 500 is probably to take out, take apart n replace one bearing, unless its to take out transmission n replace throw out bearing.

fyi, if it is in the transmission i would replace all bearings in there, or u can't wait until he opens it up n tell u which ones u need or fine a jap trans and take chances with that

well, I was talking to another mechanic. now, he's telling me it could be just the throw out bearing on the clutch. He said if it's the transmission, it will whine constanly not only when engaged the clutch. I'm really hoping it is just the clutch throw out bearing. btw it doesn't whine at all when it's in neutral and I try revving it.

edit. yes it does go away when i engage the clutch. as soon as i start lifting my foot and give it some gas, u can hear the whine. 1st to 3rd gear only tho. i don't hear it in 4th and 5th

more than likely its ur pilot bearing, that's probably y buddy sold the car. if it stop whining when u step on the clutch its the pilot bearing, not the throw, it will continue to squeal while in gear and not in neutral, the throw bearing would only give shifting problems as far as i know give this guy a call he will check for u if u want, he's a transmission guy howard 416 763 3841, i don't think he would charge to take a look at it, only person i would deal with when it comes to this kind of stuff

The Pilot bearing is only a bearing when the cluch is in. When the clutch isout, noting is moving relative to the pilot bearing. I don't see any way thepilot bearing would be noisy with the clutch out.

And the pilot bearing had no idea what gear the transmission is in.
