wow.. I guess I can say that I've never heard of oil coming out of the dipstick before. I wouldn't even know what to guess is the problem. Perhaps one of the pistons shattered into bits and all those bits fell into the oil pan and that is taking up all the volume in the oil pan displacing the oil and the only place for the oil to go is out the dipstick tube... that's just a very wild guess though...

As for your question specifically.. Cost to rebuild an engine.. probably labor alone will be $1000+. The best thing to do is just find another used engine and drop it in. You can get a used KA engine for $500 or less. In fact, you are in Socal right??? I bet you could find another NICO member looking to install an SR20 or something.. You can get there engine and they will probably even help you swap it in. I'd keep your eyes on the classified section and perhaps the Socal regional forum.. post your desire and watch for engines for sale..

BUT first.. make sure the engine really is shot.. might be something stupid that I'm not thinking of that is actually repairable.. I'll keep thinking on it.

ok.. an idea that might actually be a good guess...

If you had a bad piston ring, the air pressure built up on the upstroke of the piston would leak through and push down toward the bottom of the engine and crankcase and oil pan. With every stroke of the engine a little more air might build up underneath and eventually build up such pressure that it might be enough to actually displace the oil and shoot it out the dipstick when you pull the dipstick..

just an idea.

You could check around for prices of a rebuild.. but usually a head gasket job alone is more costly than just buying a new engine. So my previous advice will most likely still be the way to go..

This may sound kind of lame, but did you have an oil change recently. I have heard of shops putting to much oil into the engine. Check your oil fill cap on the valve cover. If there is oil pooled up in there, that could be the problem.

For what it's worth, hopefully that could be the problem, so you should just be able to drian the oil, refill it to the proper level and then do a compression check to make sure everything is in order.

Start simple and work your way up to more difficult scenarios.
