What would cause this? This is the first time Ive taken the engine apart since I bought it from the engine shop in South Carolina

This is a close up of one of the spots on the #2 cylinder does it look serious?

Everything looked pretty good to me I was curious the thoughts of the more experienced people?

Besides the pressure plate and flywheel does anyone notice anything that I am not? There is some lite scoring and carbon build up on the edges of the valves nothing major from what I can see. Thoughts and opinions would greatly be appeciated.

you cant really tell anything like that by looking at pictures. Theres no way of telling how bad the scaring is. If you cant just hone out the cylinder walls to get that out( Doesnt seem to be doable) than its going to have to be taken to a maching shop. I would defiantly tear the motor the rest of the way down to see if you can find what might of caused it.

the line on the cylidar wall look to me like the rings weren't spinning like they should or at all. run your finger over the line. If you feel a bump, you can probably hone it out.

I only drove it a few times last year. I just decided I was going to rebuild the bottom end to support a new turbo.

Diffrent camera better pictures, I ran my finger nail accross the mark and didnt feel any difference. That's not to say that a micrometer wouldnt tell a different story. It looks like the line goes all the way down the cylinder. The carbon build up is in the same small area at the top of every cylinder. I've never had a head off so I don't know how normal that is or if the amount of build up is substantal or not. Here are the extra pictures.

maybe its just oil residue..the ring didn't rotate like it was supposed to like wa-chiss said, and just stained the wall with the line of oil .but thats my .02

perhaps just pop out the crank and pistons, and i'd say wash the block really well and scrub the cyl walls..who knows..

but it still looks to be in great shape

I don't think it would be 100% required. I'm thinking about just having the block honed and installing all new internals minus the crank. That all depends on the machine shop that look at it though.

What kind of budget are you working with? Take some brake cleaner and see if that spot/line comes off. Is the machine shop building the bottom end for you?

Run your nail past it. if it dips, you've got scoring, if not it's just a stain. from the look of it, it hasn't had any real oil movement in a while. I'd suggest taking it to a machine shop ASAP and working with them to getting you a healthy bottom end to build up on.

180fan- I ran my nail on it and didnt feel any dip, resistance or pit. It honeslty looks like a stain. Most likey because thats all I want it to be haha. Im pulling everything else out and taking it to the shop today along with that flywheel to get resurfaced.

rotorimp- My budget isn't tight but in the interest of first timing it I wanted to try and do as much as I could to gain some experiance. I am having Paeco Industries do all the head work and reassembly the bottom half I'm having honed, washed, and at there discression any other work need.
