I've had an aftermarket Pioneer FM-modulated CD changer in my '93 Z with the factory Bose system since around 1994, but the installer installed it in the luggage hatch, right over the left wheel, so it skipped all the time... I was never happy with it. It finally burned out, and I have decided to go all-stock and install the correct OEM single CD player (part # B8182 89921; model # RM-C16PBX-K). In the process of searching for the Z-specific CD player, which I found on partmyride.com, I ran across tons of its Nissan sister part B8182 89920, model # RM-C16PBZ-K [H]. In fact I picked up one of those new in box for $30 just for the instruction manual and wiring harness. My question is, does anyone know why the two units aren't cross-compatible? They are both manufactured by Matsushita and both look identical; both have the same patent numbers on them; both have the same faceplate number (PV-705); and both have the same 4-pin power, one-pin ground, and 8-pin DIN connectors on the back. Since they both appear to have the same laser mechanism inside it I'd love to figure out how to do some surgery and transplant the circuit board from the used Z player into the brand new standard Nissan player and create a Franken-player with a brand new laser assembly and the Z-compatible circuit board. Has anyone attempted anything like this?

Thanks,

Lee in Charlotte, NC
