Question re: transmission behavior

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Gang-

Whenever I'm driving around on back roads around 40-45 mph, I notice that while in normal "D" mode (i.e., not DS or Manual shift mode), the engine is always bogging down and appears to be in 5th gear much of the time. If I give it just a little more gas, it always seems to jump past 4th gear and down shift into 3rd with the RPMs way up. I get the whole idea behind trying to maximize fuel economy and why you would want to keep the RPMs as low as possible within reason, but it just seems like the car never uses 4th gear at these speeds. It's either in 3rd or in 5th all the time.

Also, in DS mode, I know the shift points are delayed (by design), but still there are times like when I'm doing a steady 70+ mph on flat highway, and it just hangs in 4th gear and won't shift into 5th unless i drop it back into normal "D" mode or manually shift to 5th. I'm pretty sure 5th gear is not locked out while in DS mode.

My point is, I feel like the transmission's behavior is just "off" sometimes. Does this sound familiar to anyone else?

I'm wondering if there's a "no dealer involved" method for resetting the adaptive transmission values to see if that makes any difference. Has anyone had their adaptive values reset by the dealer? Good results? Cost?

TIA,
Tim

Sounds exactly like mine. I am getting used to it. Once you are used to the behaviour, it is more predictable. My RDX transmission was very very predictable and logical.
DS mode - depending on throttle pressure will shift at just over 4k rpm (if you are giving it a little gas)...but it will hold at 4k or so if you keep it there. When mine hovers and wont upshift, I just manually shift up one.
So - I think this is "normal" for our EX. You just need to get used to what it wants to do based on your throttle pressure.

XIS-

As always, thanks for chiming in. Glad to hear it's not just me :)

Cheers,
Tim
