I was thinking about when i redrill a q45 rotor to be 4 lug if those extra empty holes throw off the balance of the rotor. What I do is line up one hole and drill 3 new holes using my old rotor as a templete. That leaves me with a rotor that has 8 holes. When i put it on the hub i have 4 empty holes. I was thinking of filling these extra holes with jb weld and leveling it off. Then painting the whole inner hub with a high temp engine paint. Kind of like bondoing the holes up but with jbweld. What do ya think. Could that hurt the balance more than leaving them open.

lol. i cant imagine that would make any kind of difference. i guess you could do that if you wanted your rotor to look pretty.

so you dont think unevenly spaced empty holes on a rotor spinning at 60mph would affect the balancing?

i doubt you could feel it if it did, but its not like jbweld has the same weight as iron. and it would just crack off in a day or 2 anyway.

Not to hijack or anything, but what do you use to drill the holes? Will a normal drill press work? What size bit/what kind of bit would be best?

thanks

you'd goto a machine shop and say "I need the holes of this size drilled in this pattern" and not screw it up yourself.

on the balance thing:

the brake rotor manufactureres don't relaly "Balance" the rotors guys...so don't worry about it. there just isnt enough leverage fom that brake rotor to make it worthwhile (that .02 gram is only 3mm or so from the hub...)-Chet

drill press hah ha. I'm ghetto and if your like me you can use a regular drill. All you need are a few good clamps and an old 4lug rotor. You need something that is the some diameter as the inside of the rotor. This is used to keep the rotors centered on top of each other. At this point you just spin the 4lug rotor untill one of the holes is lined up with one of the 5lug holes. Then clamp the rotors so they dont move at all. That is the last thing you need. Next all you need is a few good drill bits. I used the ones that are Gold looking. They say they can cut through anything. Use one about half the size and one the size of. I used a 1/2" sized bit. Don't quote me on that Just see if it is right before you drill. Pretty simple really. Works like a charm. I'm sure you could clamp the rotors mark the holes and then take it to a drill press if you have one.
