When looking at the Active suspension I'm getting ready to work on I find I 've got a couple of questions on what to get recharged.

I know there are 4 actuators(strut looking things), a front and rear main accumulator(1 each), 4 sub accumulators and a front pump accumulator. The FSM shows them all, but what actually needs recharging? On one thread I read someone got 9 things recharged from Keith. That just doesn't add up.

You mainly need the 4 accumulators on each shock. There is a pump accumulator that is nice to rpelace but isnt necessary. The struts should be lifetime.

Got a reply from the man who would know(texasoil). Here it is. Hope this helps anyone who would like to know.

"Actually there are 10 one is integral with the pump and a different design. One front center on top of the piping is a 'pump output' accumulator and incorporates a pressure switch. The switch opens/closes the solenoids that allow active oil into the pump. Solenoid closed = no pump horsepower consumption. Then there are the front and rear main accumulators. Front main is in front of right front fender well, mounted vertically, about 2"dia x 10" high. Rear main is mounter horizontally in fromt of right trunk well. about same size as front main. Front 'valve' accumulator is mounted on the pressure control valve--which is by the front main accumulator. This small (1"x 4") accumulator mounts horizontally fore-aft on the front side of the valve assembly and is easiest accessed by removing the headlight assembly and coolant overfloe reservoir. Alternative is to disconnect the valve assembly and drop it out (not a big deal really.) Rear vavle unit is mounted onto the rear pressure control valve, points to the rear,--2 styles (interghangeable) one is 1" x 5', the other 1.5" x about 4". .

Each strut has an accumulator (2' x 5" approx) attached by 3 small bolts.

Strut units are ESSENTIAl. Mains NECESSARY for any active control. Pump output DESIRABLE for maximum active system performance and to protect pump solenoids from frequent cycling (could wear them out.) Valve units are helpful for maximum performance - they significantly increase frequency response (on washboards) but only then. They also dampen any 'water hammer' noise if that is a problem--that seems to depend on individual cars and piping rigidity."

There are actually 9 accumulators that can get recharged. Keith said he has not really done #10 which is the very first one described above. "one is integral with the pump and a different design" doesn't really need it.

So that does mean 9 Accumulators can be recharged to help revamp your active system.

1) 4 Strut units 2) 2 Mains, Front and Rear3) 1 Pump output accumulator4) 2 Valve unit accumulators

That's 9 and there you have it.

It's always been definative, if you want it to perform like new, you recharge everything every 4,5,6 years. Just as you frequently change conventional shocks.

Based on the active system maintenance alone, the Q45a cost around 5-6-7 cents per mile EXTRA [every 60k after the first 60k] over a conventional Q....................obviously few are ever maintained to as new.

The 2 mpg mileage decrease uses an extra 100 gallons of fuel per 15,000 miles adding a few hundred also! Tires wear out faster since they bear the extra stress, same with brakes from the weight so it might really be closer to 7-10 cents per mile more to drive an ACTIVE Q vs a conventional or touring version!

Something they don't mention at the used car lots.

And while the 7 larger accumulators may last longer, the little pressure control units go flat quickly, and then the car loses its edge. It's still comfortable and level, but doesn't respond as well.
