I can't find it in the service manual; I want to know the installed valve height recommended by Nissan for the S13 SR20DET. I have way too much clearance between my rocker arms and the cams. (I need 3.4mm shims to make the clearance correct... which isn't available. 3.2mm for the shims and only 3.0mm for the guides are available). I think the machinist ground too much off the valve stem ends... he went off of the installed height on a 91 SE-R motor.

you dont measure the gap from rocker to cam unless you have solid lifters. The job of HLAs is to correct that gap under oil pressure.

Thats the best write up i can find on how to measure the valve clearance with HLA's

Are you using the correct clearance specs?here's a writeup on the solid lifters, if you haven't read it already.

You shouldn't have had to grind the stem of the valve at all, that may be your issue.

Yes, I know of this write up, and it is very thorough! The valve stems were ground because the valve seats were ground. The stems need to be shortened to keep the same installed height. The bad thing is that he did not measure the height beforehand and use that spec, he used a known installed height found in his mechanics program thingy that he has on his computer. The only SR that he has though is the SE-R Sentra/G20/Etc.
