This is my first post here guys, I've got a 1990 Stanza with the SOHC KA24E. My problem is that, while I know the IAV (or idle speed control valve) is supposed to raise the idle to compensate for additional engine load, mine does not seem to be working properly. I replaced it about a year ago due to constantly having the engine die, so I know it's doing some part of its job, since under normal conditions it runs perfectly. However, when the car is cold in the morning, there is no cold wheather fast idle, or if the air conditioner is turned on, there is no compensation for the compressor lag, the rpm's drop dramatically. Is there something other than the IAV that has a part in these function? I know the IAV works, when it failed last year the car wouldn't run at all. Its a 5spd manual as well, if that helps. Oh, and I sincerly apologize if this has been covered allready. Thanx in advance. ---D.

as far as no fast idle cold it sounds like your FICD has failed. (not uncommon on any nissan) I believe you have the bimetal air type device. location is a bit fuzzy but i think it is located near the #1 cyl on the intake manifold. check its connection for corrosion. if ok run the car with it disconnected then apply 12volts to it and see if there is a noticable change in idle speed.
