I just bought a 92 240sx off of a girl from New York. She said her window tint laws are 35%...same as ours. Only problem is I got the tint meetered at D&L and it came up 11%. The girl said however that its not considered illegal because of the "grandfather law" which states window tinting can be any range as long as the car is a certain age or made before some year and the 92 falls under that law. Does anyone know anything about this? I kinda like the tint but dont need to be getting pulled over because of it.

I am pretty sure you'l have some trouble.

grandfathering applies to stock OEM stuff that then becomes illgegal.

Even <if> she were right, it wont matter to the Cops around here and with things like this, the burden of proof would be on you the way things work...Wish I had some more positve inout on this but thats my sense of it

Sounds like BS, she should have it removed.

Yea i looked into it and found out that Fred was right. It only applies to oem stuff that is later made illegal. I got the tint metered at 11% so its definatly illegal and the inspection place wont pass me until i take it off. I went to D&L and they basically told me not to pay them $100 to take it off when i could do it with alittle soapy water and elbow grease.

if you're careful, acetone will make it a lot easier on your elbows.

I have a friend that moved here the same time I did. They made her strip her tint to pass safety inspection. But its a one time thing. You can have it retinted after passing (like she did). From my experience in Atlanta, cops wont bother you for having dark tint.
