When did Nissan begin using timing chains instead of belts? And on what models? Just curious so I can pass along the useful info on.

Thank you very much.

Not sure, I know they used chains obviously in the KA24DE's, not sure about E's. I'm not sure when they even started using the DE's, unless it debuted in the 240 in '91.

Are you saying that All Datsun / Nissan model since 1912 have timing chains? I'm not the most mechanically inclined but I kinda find that hard to believe. Could someone else second this?

actually the question should have been when did nissan start using belts. As Alan said they started off using chains and went to belts in 1984 with the release of the VG30 I may be wrong as there might be a 4cyl with a belt a couple years earlier.

And Alan I am impressed you know that. I know your an enthusiast but that info would have taken some serious digging to find.

Is there any advantage to a belt? It seems to me that another wearing part would be a bad thing...

Belts are generally quieter, and lighter. But they need to be replaced at certain intervals accessory belts do.

no the new chains have specially designed teeth to make them 10 times quieter then the old chains and they do not streach as easily as the older ones. As of 2005 model year Absolulty no nissan will have a belt any longer. for the last 3 model years the only vehicle that has a belt is the frontier/xterra motor VG33E/ER. In about 2 months that engine and the 2004 MY of those 2 vehicles will end and the all new designed 2005 models of those 2 will take over. They will sport a VQ40DE[4.0L](chain driven)
