When you replace a transmission do you replace the clutch?

Also my car lately has been making a noise like when I go over speed bumps... kinda sounds like the front tires are rubbing something... I have checked and nothing is rubbing or in the way. Do you know what that could be?

Another one is since the rubbing the car also creeks when backing out of a drive way or going over irregular bumps or pavement where the car has to flex. I hear the creaking in the sunroof! Is that normal?

Lately when the car is idling (I know the 6MT' make some noise when the clutch isn't pressed in) but it can be really loud at some points.. Where when you are away from the car you hear the chatter over the exhaust note

Last one... When I turn the car on in the morning and the car is cool I get this loud chatter or some type of noise coming from the clutch/transmission and I feel some type of shutter or vibrations into the clutch peddle. This then goes away when the car comes down on the idle. This doesn't take place when the car is warm.

Thanks for your help steve and the rest of you guys. I am going to be taking it to the dealer soon!

Not unless it is required. It is very hard to get clutch covered under warranty. Most of the time they are overheated and cannot be resurfaced.

This sounds like compression rods to me.

Lift the sunroof to the tilt position and using glass cleaner and clean the window seal. Then open the window fully and clean the crap off the corresponding body seal.

It sounds like you have a failed input bearing in the trans. I cannot say that it is completely that and not just a release bearing. If the noise is similar to that of a roller bearing (cannot think of a way to describe it better) I would suspect the input bearing and that should warrant transmission replacement.

See I was thinking that it was going to be needing a Transmission.

I had a new one put in last December and it was never the same. Even when I got it back it was never the same thing! Even the Shift gates where not the same.

It has been only 6k miles since I had it replaced.

I have never heard of such a thing! The First one was the Syncros and now this one is something different.

I also think it needs a new clutch or the Clutch is slipping due to the transmission thing.

I wish they would fix that under warranty too!

I can't believe how many problems you have had with your car??

My window seals have seperated from the door frame slightly, the dealership has replaced both front door rubber seals around the door frame. I would be that is what is causing your whistle?

I don't know but i really have had quite a few problems... I hope they don't give me **** about my driving... It don't matter how hard you drive. A transmission shouldn't go in 5k miles

Ugh...that sucks bro

Don't ever feel bad for a problem with the car while its still under warranty. Its supposed to be good until at LEAST the time that its past warranty. That is why they guarantee the vehicle.

Make sure they fix it and fix it right. Too bad Steve isn't around to do the work on your car.

Oh I hate replacing those flapper valves, it always cuts the hell out of my arm, having to go elbows deep into a razor sharp tank full of fuel. At least the gas lets you know where you have cut yourself.

The trunk is an easy fit itjust needs to be loosened and adjusted.

Tampa:

I was as lucky as a dog that just got tossed a bone, when my dealership actually replaced my clutch and flywheel under warranty---but it cost me just $500 for work that actually costs about $2,000 plus labor. I am already on the prowl to see if they will do another clutch work for me for that price ($500) before my warranty is up in 2010. I have been a lucky SOB with parts and labor with my car. As you well know, the tune up I had the last time cost me just $80 for labor (I bought all the parts myself at Infiniti dealership) with a certified Nissan/Infiniti Tech. I am going to buy my Tech a good christmas gift--maybe a nice bottle of wine or a gift card, for all his kindness and goodwill.

I was just in the shower and thinking the same thing.

Steve,

If you had to do a transmission replacement, What is the cost of replacing the clutch... Maybe I should have them put in a High performance clutch?

Any thoughts as to which ones are the best?

Isn't there a man law about thinking about Nico and in particular Jackos bone while scubbing your naked self?

As for a COD clutch, I know the flywheel itself is ~$1200 plus ~$400 for the disc and cover. Not cheap at all, I'm sure y'all know it is a duel mass and cannot be resurfaced. There are many aftermarket options but most of them are single mass and you will notice more noise as there is nothing to absorb the shock.

Good thing with the labor if you are having a new trans put in the over lapping laboer should save you some money.

i have put numerous aftermarket clutch and flywheel in G's and Z's and with a single plane flywheel as apposed to dual mass you WILL have vibration pretty bad up till about 2100 rpms. if you don't mind it it won't bother you but if your sensitive to noise i wouldn't do it.

If a customer brings me a clutch/flywheel while i'm doing a trans in the car or a motor whatever it happens to be and i toss it on for free no charge and it makes the customer happy and its only 5 minutes of work to yank the clutch and flywheel and toss a new one on there, so it dosn't bother me any.

Your rear window noise is most likley the partition glass i have fixed a handful of 05-06 sedans with that noise coming from the rear window area on both sides.

With your noise over slow bumps while they are in the area ask them to loosen your motor mounts jack the motor up with a pole jack and lube them then retorque them i have seen that noise almost same as a compression rod on a few cars.

Your sunroof seal there is a TSB on it.

As for what clutch's are good i have always had good luck with ACT for street driven things if Tilton makes a clutch for the G or Z that will be the last clutch you ever buy i used the tilton twin disc and hydrolic t/o bearing in my old sfwd car. also CC makes a great clutch and Chris has great customer service also can't go wrong with an Exedy. Don't get anything to extreme though as engagement sucks and the hotter it gets the more it grabs so stray away from a carbon

Sorry to hear you are having so many problems. So far onlt two tire pressure sensors and a drivers side air bag control module all replaced under warranty. I will turn 72k miles in a couple of days and the only cost so far was $1200 for new tires.

My $.02 says if the transmission comes out replace the clutch. There is a savings on labor.

Does your vehicle sound like this?

This appears in another thread but it is so funny I couldn't resist.

Good luck

Tampa:

Here is a little list to cut costs. Go to a nissan dealership parts dept and ask them to give you a list of all the parts and cost for a 350Z clutch replacement. The prices should look like the following---not exactly but maybe close.

1. Clutch disc - $127

2. Clutch cover - $195

3. Throwout or release bearing - $54.64

4. 1st shaft bushing - $6.75.

5. OEM Flywheel - $1,078.

0r

6. Nismo Flywheel - $600.

However, you can get the NISMO flywheel (lightweight) at EverythingG35.com for $525.

So, I hope this info helps. Your best bet would be to get the Nismo lightweight flywheel instead of the OEM flywheel---it works well with OEM clutch parts, that is if you are going to pay for the work. However, if the dealership is going to pay for it, they tend to use OEM flywheel. I hope this helps.

The difference between the two flywheels is the dual mass. I have driven both and although the performance aspect of the single mass may out weigh the noise I know that most of you guys would not really like that, they chatter like hell, the Gs trans is not the quietest on the market but it works well (usually) and a single mass makes them rattle on application as there is now nothing to absorb the driveline vibrations.

Steve:

Thanks. I guess for someone routinely on a track, those chatters should not be an issue for them. But most of us want the comfort and quiet sometimes. even with the dual mass flywheel, i can still hear the chatter in the transmission

I think the G-35 and 350z were designed specifically for the track before Nissan decided to put them on the show room. The luxury in the G-35 is fleeting because the car behaves more like a track car than a luxury car. I guess they addressed that issue in the G-37.

I do have to agree, although I do really enjoy a good G35 coupe they have slowly been improving them since their inception. The G37 has a significant refinement over the previous model with the addition of some serious power and acceleration.
