question for q45 tech

some time ago we were talking about swappin out the front rack on my j30 for i believe it was a 96 q or prior rack.to tighten upthe steering,less rotation side to side.........my question is,im not sure what they call it,maybe the screw rod ,i dont know..anyway,is it possible to swap the gear rod for a different one..and if possible would i be able to get a rebuild kit for it if i got to take it apart.or would i have to..sorry my post is so sketchy q45tech,im trying.on a good note...i had test pipes put on my j yesterday.and no longer run cats.yippy.80 bucks,ya baby :id liketo thank you tech for all the help you have givin me.all the answers,your time.i know im not the easiest person to understand.

Rebuilt racks just get new fluid seals, they cannot afford to replace the $400 pinion gear or the rack slider nor do you get new solenoids or pressure valve.

If pinion retensioning [preload adjustment] doesn't solve the play problem you need a new pinion gear and slider gear or just a brand new rack.

Aftermarket remains are usually iffy as to meeting new specs cause the parts are not new!

actually the cars very tight,goodto go...very reactive,lol,in a good way...i saw replacement rods for different systems,though i would ask,seams the right gear rod would do it..the rack works fine.just trying to shorten the side to side,like 2.5 turns rather 3.5...thats all.was hopin it would be easier than doing the full q rack and shortening the ends to fit.which should be pretty simple,im just real lazy right now.thanks Q
