Not sure if many people on here have these, but thought I would ask anyway.

My question for people with custom rollbars (or heck, even roll cages); just wondering what kind of costs were involved in getting it made. What do I ask about or specify when inquiring about one? Also what the heck kind of places fab them? Any insight is appriciated.

I'm asking all this because the seatbelts for convertibles are built into specially made doors (for those who don't know), and my passenger door is not in good shape. I figured it might not be a bad idea to upgrade to a rollbar with a harness bar along with some fancy race harnesses or something, and just use regular 240 doors.. Seeing as the convertible door new costs 900ish, an upgrade might actually be cheaper..

Edit: Bart is the destoryer of my dreams..

I asked again because I looked at the pictures in this thread and I didn't see how it stopped the top from going down. At least, from memory that doesn't look like it'd do anything negative.. maybe I need to go take a closer look.

It has to do with the placement of the rear points. They are on the bar that goes down, and if you remember the verts are a bit more cramped in the rear because of how wide the top is in the rear quarter. I think the bar interferes with that portion. If the rear point bars were moved to the top cross bar (like I am going to do with mine) then there would be no clearance issues.

Materials cost on custom bars is cheap.about $100.It's the labor that kills you. For just a roll bar I usually charge $500. That's 4 point bar with harness bar, all installed.

Harnesses will run you $50-100every 2 years as they expire.

That's not too bad.. Still better than the new door cost, and with more benifits. Guess I'll have to find out who can do something like that around here.

yeah, from what i hears dont get the autopower roll bars! they dont hold up to well. i am getting a custom made roll bar, and they are making it inside the car ... 4 point, harness bar, and one that goes in the middle um perpendicular to the harness bar :D and the price they gave me was $500 installed!!!! surgery is set for the first weekend in july!

i got a safety21 10point in my corolla used for 120 bucks but that was in japan and it was labeled as a 6pt...oh well. i pointed it out to the guys at Parts Off and they just shrugged..."daijobu-des!" haha. best investment yet.

other cages i have bought were about that same price but thats all used. custom will cost you more, i prefer name brand for legality reasons. sure custom ones can be legalized but i found it to be more of a hastle. safety21 even comes with a gague hole in the hoop for the reffs to measure. handy stuff.

good luck, i think a FULL roll cage in a drop top would look kinda funny with the top down but different at least. would like to see some pictures.

I agree. I thought about a full cage but yeah, it would look too strange with the top down, so I thought just a rollbar would be a bit nicer looking.

i totally agree about safety. you will also strengthen your (comparitively sp?) weaker frame. makes a big difference even in a coupe.

safety is number one. any other performance gains afterward are just a bonus. i won't race any of my cars again with out a full cage. that's just me coming from personal experiences though...

good luck

i'll have to check it out. still working out the details on what i'm going to do with my 240. just universal changes to stuff now.

got my FF corolla Levin GT-Z grip race car in works now. had to disassemble her from japan and import her piece by piece. just sourcing an origional engine now. i'll check it out when i get a chance. i'm in Iraq for 6 months so not gonna get a chance to do much work on me cars.

gotta go, see you later

I suggest http://www.kirkracing.com ... I plan to go with their bar next week. I have seen one in chmercer's car and it looks solid, good fitment, good functionality, and the price with the 4 pt. bar, harness bar, and diagonal was ~400 shipped. Installation isn't that difficult according to chmercer.
