Ok, there's a panasonic unit with harddrive, but it's not an Avic. The avic D3 is Pioneer's unit, but it does NOT have a harddrive. The Avic Z2 has a harddrive.

1. On the Avic D3, you can listen to the radio, xm radio, or use either of the two A/V inputs while you operate the navigaton sytem. If you want to play a dvd, or MP3 disc, or CD, you must set the route with the Nav disc in, then when you eject the disc, it will automativally save the route and 15 miles around the route in case you get rerouted. However, while you operate the navigation, if you want to change routes, you must take out the disc, put the nav disc back in, wait for it to load, change the route, and then take it back out and replace the disc. To solve this, I purchased an accesory dvd player that plugs into the A/V input on the Avic. Now I can play cd's, mp3 discs, dvds while fully operating the Nav with the Nav disc inserted.

2. In the Avic Z2, there is a 30 Gb garddrive, with 20 GB dedicated to nav function and 10 Gb dedicated to music / Mp3 storage. In the Panasonic unit, there is also a hard drive, but NO room for MP3 storage.

3. I think my answer to 2 answered your question 3

read it again...

North America navigation maps on 2 DVD discs with 12 million Points of Interest (POI) Coverage Area: US, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii Data Size: 15GB

Yes, the 15 Gb is the 7.5 Gb on each disc, or 15 Gb total!

naww, not at all, this A/V stuff can be a bit confusing.. I've just been into it for a while and know practically everything a consumer could know about ALL of the Pioneer units made over the last 6 or 7 years!

rjdmmfl1 what accesory dvd player do you own? Wasn't sure if therewas a multi-dvd/mp3 disc changer somewhere. Where did you mount it?Is there one that would fit in the glove box? Or even better in the middlecubby hole thing.

Also if you have an ipod adapter I'm assuming you can listen to it whileusing the nav too?

thx

I purchased the pyle PLD44MUBT unit. It has a 4.3" touch screen with USb inputs, front A/V input, and bluetoth phone and audio functions. I actually purchased the storage box and brackets that comes with the factory navigation system, and installed my dvd player in that spot where the cd changer comes

So my unit looks like this...

Pioneer does offer an in dash style 6 dvd/cd/mp3 disc changer, but it costs about 600 dollars, even on ebay.

However, any dvd player will do! Farenheit offers a nice slim syle car dvd player.

http://www.farenheitusa.com/product_DVDP.htm

this allows for various mounting places and positions, including sideways!

Oh yeah, if you have an ipod adapter, you can operate that with the navigation disc in, no problem!

RJ can i order the dash trim from nissan from the navigation version instead of using the metra one. In orther words use the metra kit but use the stock double din dash trim so it matches the vents?

wooo, one ata time...

"the clarion i want has a wider screen then the pioneer d3, where could i order that part and how much was it? part number?as always thanks for your help"

The clarion has a 7" diagonal, but the size of the unit is the same... units usually come in either double din or single din.... you don't need the part number, I'd give you that piece if I thought it would work, but trust me, it won't! Nothing will fit except the factory nav unit!

"Pioneer does offer an in dash style 6 dvd/cd/mp3 disc changer, but it costs about 600 dollars, even on ebay. whats the model number? thanks"

pioneer xdv-p6... now its 450 on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/PIONEER-XD...wItem

In regards to the stock cd changer... there MAY be a way to get it to work... but it would require some rewiring. I've never seen the wiring on the back of the cd changer, but with the correct wiring harnesses, one may be able to get it to connect to a d3... but those factory cd changers are MORe expensive than the pioneer dvd changer!

Question, if I bought the factory bracket that comes with the 3.5 tech pkg, that houses the navigation system, will I be able to use that when I install an aftermarket system?

Ok, after reading review after review, I heard many pros and cons. One major con I keep coming across is that the navigation feature of the D-3 and all Avic's are inaccurate, specifically when it comes in comparison to other navi units. Wanted to get any feedback on D-3 owners regarding those comments, and whether or not they are true.

No,I don't think that will work. The reason it won't work is that the metra dash kit and the oem navigation brakets use the same area to attach to the dash. If you get the factory brackets, you won't be able to attach the metra kit. Why would you spend extra money to do that??? The metra kit comes with all brackets necessary!!!

there was a slight problem with inaccuracy with the older models, but the pioneer D3 and Z2 have improved that aspect of the navigation software. Point Addressing"...The AVIC-Z2 takes advantage of a new mapping feature, Point Addressing. Many destinations are now geocoded to a precise location, rather than to an address range, making routing more precise than ever before..."

and when they say not as accurate, they meant that it use to take you to a 100 ft range for a specific address entered. Also, I should mention that in the past, individuals were not always connecting the vss (vehicle speed sensor) wire and just relying on the internal gyro processor to detect speed and destinations. When connected properly, the pioneer navigation system is pretty darn close to perfect.

Here's a question... how long do you think the install should take for "professional" installers? I dropped my car off almost 7 hours ago and I'm beggining to get a little impatient. I miss my baby!! Plus I really have to get to work at SOME point tonight lol!

well, for professional installers, it depends on exactly what they are doing...

for my install I did the following

1. Avic D3 install w. correct hookup to vss wire2. Boyo license plate rear view camera install 3. PAC SWI PS install and programming to retain steering wheel function4. GEX-P10XMT xm radio unit install5. wiring for rear monitors (45 min)

All in all, it took me about 6 hours give or take, but that's because I wanted to get everything correct!

At most shops, they usually do multiple cars at one time, thus they are NOT gonna work on your car continuously!

Yeah, I know what you mean... it's just so damned hard to be car-less. I mean, all they're doing is replacing the stock unit with the D3 so I can't imagine it taking 7+ hours, even with breaks and time spent on other cars. All it involves is the dash kit, antenna adaptor, wiring harness, that schoshe signal thingy and an iPod cable and maybe the steering wheel cable, I don't remember if I bought that or not... I dunno, I could just be annoyed because I would normally be at work right now and since I'm not at work I have absolutely nothing to do to pass the time.

You only need a microphone with the Avic D3 if you get the bluetooth unit... if you purchase the Avic Z2, then that has voice directed navigation. IN any case, the microphone should be mounted on the sunvisor above your head for best results!

resurrecting this thread, but have you come across any pics of people with the auto climate controls and the factory nav hole with an aftermarket double din solution? I want to see the gap myself to see how hard it would be to fabricate something up that would fill a little more. I want everything to look factory, but I want to have the flexibility of a carputer, so I'm going to get a single DIN deck in the storage box and a double din touchscreen for the carputer if possible.

Sad, I don't want to lose the nice texture of the current dash
