Hey guys, I decided to tackle on spray painting. My spoiler was starting to show clear coat in the middle of it. So I decided to paint it. So I sanded it down with 600, but that seemed too high. So I used 320, and it worked a bit better, but still not effective enough. So, I bought 180 grit and it worked, but I think a bit too much! It started to cut into the plastic and left scratches. I thought the scratches would get filled in with the 3 layers of primer that i put down. It was rough in some spots so i sanded it a bit with 1000, i know it was too high but didn't have anymore 600. I then put down 1 light coat of color(black) and i 1 medium coat. The spots that were sort of sanded down are still a little rough and the color seems to be dull. Also it has a bit of white color to it. Is there something I can do to get rid of the white color and roughness on the spoiler, along with the scratches?

just sand it all down to bare plastic. primer, sand, primer, primer, paint, sand, paint, clear coat, clear coat..

the clear coat will take away from the dullness.

if there is serious wear on the spoiler, then use a filler to get it evened out.

sand the rough areas with 320 than 600 untill smooth, use bondo or filler if scratches are too deep or use spot putty, sand again with 600. Than prime it a few times, sand it again , 2 coats of color and I usually put 3 coats of clear coat on things I paint.

Dont rush it, let the coats dry properly before sanding or painting the next coat

Me and a buddy just sprayed parts of his rx-7 today. We did it very lazy but it came out good. We sanded with 150, wiped away then sprayed. I personally would have done it with 220 then wipe and clean then 320 to get out imperfections and make it nice then prime sand, prime sand, and all of that good stuff. We used rustoleum automotive primer and it came out great. I highly recommend that paint to anyone.

SEARCH and find answers, even google man. You flexing ****.

Next time try wetsanding. Of course dry sanding is gonna leave scratches with 180 grit!!! That's WAY too rough. Unless you had deep scratches to begin with, all you would have probably needed was a good wetsand with 600. Even if it did have scratches, I wouldn't go over 220, and be easy on it. And then maybe hit it with 1000, again wetsand. You don't need to take off a layer of plastic, geez.

Try sandpaper. 120 grit, dry.

If hand sanding is getting a little to boring, try your luck with a belt sander.
