Does anyone besides me tend to struggle with the brake and accelerator petals being a little too close together? Occasionally I hit the brake petal when going to acceletate. While it's only for a split second, I'm afraid of what might happen if I need to make a quick switch.

For example, I was paralell parking at my girlfriends house and it was extremely dark outside with no streetlights. So thinking I was going straight, I was actually crooked and ended up scraping the curb with my right rear tire. When I heard the scrape, I quickly reacted and tried to hit the brake (I was accelerating because I was backing uphill) and my foot ended up hitting the side of the brake petal, and I ended up acceletating instead of braking - further scratching my rim on the edge.

So with that I ask, am I the only one?

Yup. It might help to practice switching between the pedals. In the martial arts one practices physical movement in order to create efficiency of that movement, so that the act becomes second nature. It's called "Mushin" in Jap. : No thought; No mind. When someone attacks -you don't have to compose a response, it's natural like walking or reaching for something. Same thing with the gas/brake pedal.

What kind of shoes? I know I can't drive in dress shoes, so I change shoes when I get there.

My feet are smallish and unobtrusive. I put my heel between the gas and brake and move my toes left or right accordingly -- so I like them close. Makes it impossible to hit the wrong pedal.

I also wear sandals 150% of the time, or on a long summer road trip I hit cruise and drive with just socks.

All kinds of shoes. Tennis, running, boots, doesn't matter. I've never had this problem in any other car, not even my I30 has this problem. Maybe it's because I wear a size 12?

I'm another "Bigfoot" and occasionally hook the brake pedal from underneath when lifting off the gas. Never in a stress situation, luckily.

It's genetics Jesda, we get it from our daddies. If eating was responsible, you'd be there too: ref. one of your previous avatars!

Yeah Wes I did notice you have drilled petals. I put some of those in a Saturn (please don't laugh - it was my first car) and I nearly wrecked it because they were too close together. I guess the Q almost reminds me of that wich is why it's a concern.

I've had the same problem (size 11.5's).

Simple solution: Removed the brake pad, cut off 1/2" of the right side of brake pedal, then reattached brake pad with some adhesive, slid it all the way to the left.

Voila.

I'm 13W and I don't have any probs unless I have some bigass boots on. I don't move my foot between the two, I just pivot my toe while keeping the heel in the same place.

Squee - Several years of Kenpo can't overcome the laws of physics: Two objects cannot occupy the same space.

I have ultra-narrow feet, but every once in a while, I was snagging that brake pedal.

Kind of like a certani car we used to own that had too "shallow" a steering wheel - During turning, you'd often hit the headlight stalk/turn signal. Really jacks with your chi.

Nothing a hub spacer couldn't fix though.
