The "stage" or "step" of cams is usually determined by how much other **** you have to change out to use the cams. At 10.5 mm of lift, I'd do springs anyway, but technically I guess you dont have to. Also, whenever you think about getting cams, remember that you need adjustable cam gears to get em tuned right, and someone that knows what they're doing to tune em. So cams + springs + retainers + adj gears is around $550 if you know where to shop, + installation you're looking at about $750.

If thats not enough, big cams take your gas mileage down the crapper around town - I lost about 5mpg right off the bat - if all this doesn't sound worth it, just get a set of stockers, or keep your stockers if they're ok.

256 or 264 is the duration the cam keeps the vavle open. The lift it how high the valves are opend. Thats why with a high lift you have to do springs because factory spring will wear out fast and you get valve float cause the spring cant return fast enough.

i remember the stock SR cam is very short duration. something tells me it's around 220*, but i don't remember if that's the advertised or the duration at 0.05". in either case, the stock cam is small, but if you're not making about 300whp (or have plans to go over 300whp), then you probably don't need them. you can hit 300whp+ on pump gas with nothing but injectors, MAFS, GT28R and good tuning (not a piggy back, get it chipped, and of course i/c, clutch, oil cooler, radiator, etc. to hold that power).

basically: you probably don't need them. you WILL lose some power down low (unless it's not tuned now and it will be tuned after the cams). it's also expensive to get them tuned b/c the valve cover needs to removed several times to get it right, and while they're removing it and installing it over and over again you're still paying for dyno time. and don't bother with stock ECU. at least get a piggy back; much smarter to get it chipped anyways.

stock cams are 240 duration, 9.5mm lift i believe. i run the HKS 264 Step 1's and love them. Nice loappy idle with hard pulling from 4000rpm to 7500rpm.

wow, it's really really hard to get a set of those camshafts. i wish my car's suspension wasn't ghey so i could move on to making more power.to the OP, notice this guy has a GT2871R with the large turbine housing . . . so like i said, if you're not shooting for over 300whp, don't bother.

not to mention that if your already running 12psi on the t25 then adding cams will simply not make ANY more power since the fuel system is already maxed out.

I bought them through 240sxmotoring.com last December. Only cost me $380 for the set i think. I used them with the T25 for a little while. Also had an Enthalpy Tune for the cams, 550 injectors, and 2871R turbo (didnt have yet). Car felt much more Ballsy in the mid range but died at high rpm. There definitly worth the buy.

Also the HKS 264 Step 1 cams have been proven good to 400whp. If you want power over that, go with the Step 2's and upgrade valve springs.

in my opinion you should NEVER upgrade cams w/o upgrading valvetrain (stiffer springs at minimum). but then i don't hold anything back when i'm driving for fun. i don't do it all the time; in fact, i do that pretty seldom. but when i cut it loose, i don't want to be worrying. i also like to spend quality time at the track, so this is exactly the kind of thing i'm worried about. like having a bigger i/c and bigger brakes than i ever hope to need (TRUST sidemount, biggest sidemount ever made BTW, and 11.6" '97 Q45 front brakes . . .).

yea, you hit the lovely speed limiter. ive got 264/264 setup. Pretty well matched for my turbo but id be better off with the Step 2's. If you plan on drifting alot, id stick with a 256/264 Step 1 Setup with a GT28RS or GT2871R .64 turbo.

what if i am going top mount????????

the reason why i want to do topmount is becausethere are a lot of speed bumps where i live .. no matter how slow i go still cant avoid them... my t25 came off from the constant bumping and rubbing.. and my new t28 came off once too.. i have the greddy downpipe and it makes the entire exhaust close to the ground... ijust wonder if i need new engine mounts...

Do you have the DP attached to the transmission mount like its sopposed to? I dont seem to have a problem with my Greddy DP and clearance. But anyways, if the DP gets hit it wont matter which mounted turbo you have, it will still make it come loose. Pick the cams based on your powerband thats able to be made from the turbo.

so you must absolutely run adjustable cam sprockets with aftermarket cams? i was under the impression that a guy i know with aftermarket cams in his sr was running the factory sprockets..i must have misunderstood......if nobody minds me being a threadjacker can you tell me if it is even worth just running one aftermarket cam and one factory? say an aftermarket intake cam and factory exh. cam , vice versa...ive been thinking about doing this and have been searching for people who have done it but have not found anyone so im guessing there is no point in it?

when i was going to change my cams out of my notchtop, i had to also buy s13 cam sprockets..

and that was suggested by enjuku, so.. yes, you can use the stock sprockets.

the idle will probably change some but wont be very loapy. my 264s loap like crazy around 800rpm. people think its got some crazy cams but there actually considered mild. others think its an idling problem, LOL.

I think that might be the problem. the DP is not attached just bolted onto the trbo and exhaust... the DP makes the exhaust 1.5-2.0" appart from the body.. can it be possible that my engine mount are old and are squashed down too much????

I dont know the exact answer but i guess its a possibility. How old and what kind of mounts do you have? Im using Nismo on mine with good fitment so far.

when a piston slams into a valve that wasnt moved out of the way by its crushed and bound spring.
