I'm not a tire guy by any stretch of the imagination, but the big thing that jumps out at me between those two tires are that the H4S are high performance "all-season" tires, while the ES100 are Ultra High Performance Summer tires.

Since you can't find the Yokohama ES100, have you checked out the Kumho Ecsta MX?

Have you tried ordering from Tirerack? I'm sure they have the Yokohamas.

ES100s are not even very good tires, so the avid's will be even worse.

If you want something truly high performance, look into falken azenis 615 or hankook RS-2

Really?

How cool man thanks for the advice.Man my 240 is a 93 s13 Coupe SE model.I'm using my stock "15" Alloys

Here's what I really want: Something that grips really good and rides quiet n'smooth. I just want it to get me to and from school/work comfortably, but are great for handling when I hit those back roads at top speeds.

Ive never been to a track and I dont plan on it.At least not with this car.

Anymore suggestions?

I am a sponge here.

i used to have es100s on my old 240, i loved those tires. great in rain, great handling and quiet. i had 225/45/17s all the way around.

naed240sx: i know tire opinions differ and im not trying to start an argument, but i consider yokohama to be a far superior tire to both hankook and falken. i used to work for discount tire and we had so many complaints about the falkens with ride quality, and ive just never been a big fan of hankook, no real complaints from customers though.

if there is a discount tire or americas tire(same company) anywhere near you, they can usually get the es100s within a day or two. decent prices too. they will usually match tireracks prices, or anybody who might be lower, to get you as a customer. when i get wheels for my new 240 and for my camaro i will probably be getting the es100s i loved them so much.

Uhhhh wtf.

Ride quality? Who cares. We are talking about performance tires here. Good ride quality = ****ty soft sidewalls and horrible response. NO performance tires offer good ride quality.

As far as es100s being so great, tell me, what are the best tires you have ever owned? You may just think they are good, because you have never owned any true UHP tires.

the problem with the es100 is that it's old as ****, came out in 99 i think, and it totally sucks for grip. those tires slide so easy it's insane. driving my s13 coupe with 8 extra wheels w/tires inside i could slide no problem on the street on brand new es100 without even trying. there's much better tires for the price. the ONLY thing the es100 is good for is crazy stretches, like 225/40 on 18x12, and that's only cause it looks good stretched.

kumho ecsta spt is cheaper and much better than es100. don't know about wear but grip is pretty good for a cheapy. chunk like crazy for drifting though.

just for comparison-at drift event i started with 16x8 -10 offset wheels with almost new 225/50 es100s, it understeered a bit with 16x8 +10 205/50 hankook rs2 up front (duh) but i could still drift them pretty easy. stock ka, too. switched rears to 15x7 +15 205/55 kumho ecsta spt and it understeered like crazy, much harder to slide the rear. wayyyyy more grip than es100 even though the tires were skinnier and the wheels were more sunk in.

Hey thanks for taking the time to give that information. But can you tell if the Yokohama AVID H4S are comperable to the es 100's?The Yokohama AVID H4S are much cheaper and seem like a good tire.Have you heard anything about these tires?

h4s is an all season tire, it'll be good for a daily driver. grip will be ok but not great, it'll work good in the rain. has like a 60k mile warranty so it'll last a while.

es100 is a "performance" tire. it's supposed to have better grip but still work good in rain. no mileage warranty so if they wear out quickly you're screwed, and they will wear out much quicker than the all season tire.

sorry, i forget about this forums sometimes

i will reitirate what sultan said, the h4s is an all season tire that wasnt made for performance, ive never had personal experiance with those, but my friends girlfriend has them on her car ('00 accord). when ive ridden in that car its always been pretty quiet and smooth, but i dont think they would be up to the task of spirited driving. so no, they arent compareable to the es100s but they arent a bad tire for daily driving.

oh and i never trust mileage warranties. ive seen the h4s not live up to them, which usually means free tires!, and my es100s after about 6,000mi(when i still worked there my boss had seen almost 40,000 mi. out of the es100s before) still looked brand new. although i rotated them about every 2-3,000 miles. which is a good thing to do if you are beating on the tires alot anyways.

good luck gettin tires

what Dean said about yoko tires, he doesnt mean yokohama makes bad tires

just like Sultan said, the es100's are ancient...and they havent tried to make a replacement yet

the AD07 is up in rt615/rs2 grip level, but costs twice as much...the only other thing they make are the R-comp a032's and a048's

if youre on an es100-like budget, theyre not the tires for you

dean sent me a pic of one of his sets that had es100s on them...maybe it was a set of drift spares

ah well, the falkens are better anyway

I'm in the market for a set of new tires and RS-2 and Azenis are better than ES-100 as a performance wise. Period. A lot of autocrss guys are running those 2 tires. I did some research and learned that I can't get 245/40 17 RS-2 and 615. I wish they offered them.

then how are you running 245/40/17?

if youre planning on getting wheels to fit the 245, you cant fit 245's in front with an s13 anyway, and a move 10mm one way or the other, depending if you want a stagger or not, will not harm you

245 will fit up front on s13. It's just not for the feint of heart.

If you don't plan on tracking your car than don't get to hung up on people suggesting you buy near R compound tires like the RT615 or the RS2. The es100s are an old design, but don't listen to anyone who tells you they are quiet. Most tires will be quiet when new. To get both grip and a smooth ride you usually have to pay more. For comfortalbe daily driving with nice grip, maybe consider the Pirelli Pzero nero m/s or the more expensive Michelin exalto PE2s.

I find Tireracks website informative for tire research. Keep in mind that all the ratings that are given for grip, ride comfort, etc. are based on online surveys. I find it more informative to check out their track tests and reviews.

One person may like a tire like the es100 and another may hate it, but a persons expectations of a tire will differ from anothers.

I never said that I wanted 245/40/17's.My initial questions were about Yoko 205/60/15's.

Anyways im still shopping for tires.Nismofly would you recommend 205/60/15?Or would your recommend 205/50/15?I have heard that 205/50/15 would give me better handling and cornering, but it just seems like there would be a huge gap because i have the stock suspension. What do you think?
