Question about wattages when adding an amp along with deck power

Let's say I have a 40x4 deck, and a 4x40 amp. Does the deck power simply dissapear through the amp, and only the amp powers my speakers? Or are they added together somehow?

They are not added together and the deck rating is normally a "peak" rating while the amp rating should be "RMS" or continuous.
