Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a Versa and I test drove an S-model 6 speed. The only thing I disliked about the car is the shifter - you can feel every gear change - it clunks into every gear and is really noisy. Is this normal?Does this go away over time or do you just get used to it?

Thanks for any info.

Mine does that. I wouldn't describe it as a "clunk", but it is very... well, definite.

And I like that about the car. I've driven too many "vague" manual transmissions. This one makes sure you know where it is.

I drove the 6 speed before buying the CVT. I liked the 6 speed, the only problem I had right off the bat was the gear spacing was so close it was hard to tell if it was in first or third without letting out the clutch. But, after about 20 seconds, I had it down. If felt fine to me. The rpm's do kind of float though instead of falling between gear changes. That and the fact that the 6sp was turning 3000 rpm at 70 vs. the CVT turning 2400 made up my mind to go with the CVT. I tell you, I have not regretted it. Either one would be fine.

He's talking about the physical spacing between the gates.

I second you're opinion about the 6sp. It's exactly what drove me to buy the CVT instead of the 6MT. I read in a couple reviews that there was a fix promised for the revs floating between shifts.

I honestly could not drive a manual with that much clunking. The rev overrun did not bother me as much - I actually think that it would help with speed because the revs would better match the next gear up. It would probably destroy the clutch sooner though.

Do you think that they will put in a fix for the clunky shifter? Or is there a non-OEM fix for this?

Thanks

I don't think it is something Nissan will fix unless there is considerable complaining. I don't notice it much anymore.

Part of the noise is from the reverse lockout & I wouldn't remove that.

I stopped noticing the noise that shifter makes after about a day. My wife has a '94 Talon and you should hear the racket THAT makes when you shift.

I've had my Versa w/ 6sp MT for about 2 weeks and I don't have any complaints about the shifting ratio, noise, or anythign else. It's peppy and does a fairly good hole shot shoudl you need to. I actually wanted and test drove a CVT equipped Versa at the dealer my commute is long and requires little shifting once I'm up to speed. I settled on the 6spd since once I'm in 6th gear it can stays there for quite a few miles before I need to change. Also the only SLs on the lot were a black one with CVT and a white one with the 6spd. Black were I live is really hard to keep clean and hot sitting in the sun. My only real requirements when buying the car with cruise and AC.
