I was doing some thinking and I have to start thinking about some new tires for winter... I think i have a set of wheels lined up so thats not an issue, however I got to thinking when I was reading the owners manual today (dont ask)...

Using a tire that is considered an all season tire with a lower temperature rating should, in theory, do better in the winter... Winter tires go bad when it gets too hot and the asphalt causes them to vulcanize... Having tire that has a comparable tread design with a B or a C temp rating should do good in the snow and cold, yes? Compared to a snow tire, the only thing about it is I want to have good snow traction but I dont want to have to worry about screwing up my tires if I have to leave them on until april or may when it will be getting warmer...

Let me know if im correct in my thinking..

What's great in theory isn't so good in practice when you're sliding through an intersection or cannot get traction while trying to accelerate.

Winter requires winter tires. Any tire not specifically inteneded for 'winter traction' becomes extremely hard and traction goes way down. Dynamic traction, rubber actually wearing off of your tire as tread blocks rub the road, is lost and in a cold slick road condition and pretty much gravity is all you have to rely on.Siping, wear rating, cool looking tread design... all lost if the tire hardens in colder than intended condition.Winter tires are a must!

Found that out the hard way. I'm getting some Blizzaks or Nokian Hakkapeliitta's for this winter. The "all season" tires often left me barely able to get enough traction to get out of my parking space.

Ah you funny guys, I live where I can basically run my summer tires all year long, muhahahaha.

Guess you just have to get the winter tires & then swap on ur regular ones by middle of spring or so.

Yeah, but you've got earthquakes, mudslides, killer bees, brush fires, locusts and probably some other natural disasters I've forgotten to mention.

And the Governator, who qualifies as an unnatural disaster.

Thanks for the posts.....

I know many of you like blizzaks... Do you have any other ones you like that do good in (especially) deep snow and ice, and will last 2-3 seasons (say november to march/april)

Hi, Wes.

Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22 or WS-50, Michelin Pilot Alpin and Pirelli Winter 240 would be the ones I would consider ... pick studless rather than studdable (you don't need studs where you are.)

I have three rules which I live by: Never get less than 12 hours sleep, never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city, and never go near a lady with a tattoo of a dagger on her hand. Now you stick with that, and everything else is cream cheese.
