so i just replaced the clutch on my 88 hardbody and I had alot of trouble getting the transmission back on. I noticed there was a bushing on the end of the spline shaft which kept getting in the way when i tried to mount the transmission so i took out the bushing and it just slid right in. So my question is do i absolutely NEED this bushing or can i do without it. Ive drove around for a few days now and nothing has gone wrong. Any input?

if it was in there to begin with put it back in. it may not be hurting anything right now, but it may. did you use an alignment tool?

ya i used an alignment tool. I had such a hard time getting the transmission in there with that bushing though. And on top of that I really dont exactly feel like dropping my transmission again. But if i abslutely have to i guess i should.

Its called the pilot bushing. Its not supposed to be stuck on the input shaft, but rather pressed into the flywheel. When you do a clutch, you are supposed to remove the old one, and use the new one. Maybe you could just run without it forever, IDK.
