Question about the shift knob

Car: 2009 Nissan Versa 1.8

I got a 2009 Versa 1.8 Hatchback Auto, I saw that there is a shift knoc, curiouse as what does that do on automatic cars.

Shift knob? The gear selector 'stick'? That puts it in park, neutral, or drive.

The shift lock allows you to be able to take the gear out of Park without have the ignition on/brake on. Basically you only use it to put the car in Neutral when the car is dead and needs to be rolled somewhere.

most often used by technicians when keys are not available or unsafe to supply power to operate the shift lock solenoid to move the shifter stick out of the way to facilitate dash work
