Question about the position of the brake caliper

I have noticed, that on my alti the caliper is facing the front, while in the Audi it faces the back, same relates to all cars, some front, some front and angled up, some back ect.

There has to be some logic behind it.

So the question is, what determines the position of the caliper?

an engineer determines the placement of the caliper. :)not the answer you were hoping for, I know, it seems to be done because of the way the spindles are designed on different vehicles....
