I have a 95 se without ABS, and I'm trying to figure out if I have a vlsd or not. When I look at the differential from the rear, I see some sort of bolt with an indented square head on it, and it's surrounded by what looks like an orange rubber seal. Is this the orange sticker everyone is talking about? Or is there an actual sticker on the diff somewhere?

You may not like my answer but just crank the wheel in one direction and gun it. You will not be able to do a standing 360 without an lsd.

I do that a lot. Never a full 360, but I'll throw the tail out on turns all the time. Car drifts for a while, very controlled, then goes straight. Seems like I could hold this drift as long as I wanted to, or until I let off the throttle or shift anyway. I lost control entering the highway once in the rain and the car just kinda fished left, then fished right and straightened out. But I can't tell if it's my driving or if it's the lsd (or lack thereof).

i can do a standing 360 without an lsd. maybe you didnt try hard enough.

even easier way, do a burnout in a straight line. if there are 2 marks, its lsd, if there is one, its open or shot.

my non-lsd S13 would leave two burnout marks in a straight line;)

the orange sticker is on the driver's side upper part of the diff cover. on my s13 if you pull the rear wheel and look down at the diff through the wheel well you can see the sticker on there (dunno about S14's but i'd assume so).

oh and the "bolt with indented square head" is probably the drain or fill plug (depending on whether you're looking at the bottom or up on the side of it). the orange stuff is most likely some gasket goop or something someone may have put on it before putting it back in??? but not what everyone is talking about for sure ;)

Jack up the rear of your car and put the transmission in neutral.

Spin one wheel.

If the other wheel spins in the same direction, it's the vlsd.If the other wheel spins in the opposite direction, it's open.

Very simple.

one wheel spun, the other wheel didn't budge. I'm guessing it's open.

Yeah its probably open, did the same with my 93, its a bummer but then you gotta think, when that engine is dropped in you might as well get an lsd as well ;)
