Question about the lines on the sr20 head

I bought a front clip of a 180sx and just finished installing it into my s13 fastback, and might i say it runs like a champ! but i remember reading and researching that only the blacktop s13 motors have lines that are vertical on the front of the head. Well my motor is suppose to be a redtop but the head has the vertical lines. And i even went to go look at my friends Type - x blacktop and the line were identical. Does anyone have any idea if this really is a black top with just a red valve cover?

I dont think so i remember a post about this kind of thing that duistinguished(sp?) the years of sr's but i cant find it any more.

Many of the later model red top motors came with the "fins" cast into the head. You can check the "red top vs. black top" sticky at the top of this forum for more info.

During the last couple months that the redtop was made the heads came with fins. Pull out a coilpack and look at the stamps at the bottom of the coil to get a rough estimate of when the engine was made.

wow i didnt know that about the stamps at the bottom of the coil packs thanks for that now i can tell what year engine mine is. I will check that later but it has no fins
