I know there are some other guys here who like to play a little holdum once in a while. Somethin happened while I was playing with some friends last night, and I wanted to see what you guys had to say about it.

Okay basically the river cards came out to be a royal straight: 10JQKA, I was holding an A and K, my friend was holding a 9 and a 3. When the betting was over we flipped em over and he said that we HAVE to split the pot evenly, because nobody won. He said that we could just choose to use all 5 river cards as our hand, and that way we had to split. I was pissed off because I had the straight pretty much from the flop, and he had a lesser straight. I argued that we should have to use the pocket cards (cards we were delt), otherwise it almost makes it pointless to bet on a loaded up river like that.

So, was it a draw or did I win?

Sorry bud but it was a draw. You can use any combination of your 2 hole cards and the 5 community cards to make the best hand. Since you both had the same hand using the 5 community cards, there is no kicker, so it is a draw.

Now the question I want to know is...why the hell didn't you push him out early? A 9 and a 3? You should have gone all in on that s*** after the flop or at least come at him with a huge bet.

ahhh dammit thats totally weak! you should HAVE to use your pocket cards, or at least one of em-- that's pretty crappy that you dont even have to be betting on what you're holding (or not holding, hehe)...

oh well...

..and beleive me, I was betting like a monster-- I think he thought I was bluffing, and also he made his (smaller) straight earlier so he thought he had something. Heh, the reason why Im even still talking about this is cause it coulda been a game ending hand if I had gotten what I STILL FEEL LIKE I deserved ;)

ah well, thanks for the heads up... I'm still gonna complain about it, but at least I know I was technically wrong

If you think you should have to use your hole cards, then maybe you should try omaha holdem.

Dude, Playing p0ker is what I want to do for a living. Pissed me off that our natives in NC decided to make a video game casino instead of a real deal, cards on the table, casino.

EDIT Nothing but love for you guys, but you need a real casino up there in the mountains.

hehe: foxwoods and mohegan sun are both within a half hour drive from me, not to mention the taj and all that in jersey. I would like to hone my skills a little more and then put some real money down.

Tell then, it's fake no-value colored chips-- with pride and s*** talking on the line ;)

heh, I know- that's the draw to p0ker... but look at me: I dont even know the rules right yet.

I'd love to go to the casino with someone who knows what theyre doin sometime, and they can sorta nudge me in the right direction. I can bluff my buddies on thursday night pretty decently, but who knows how I'd do with real card players.

...and I suck on internet p0ker :(

haha I still like it though, its fun-- not a living.

My uncle ran a p0ker house (illegal) here for several years. He tought my two cousins, they can play most pros under the table. One is only in middle school. I have wanted to hook up with him and get him to teach me.

that is what he does for a living now. Goes down to Mississippi and plays on th eriver boats. Usally goes down about once every month or two.

Must be nice. Play p0ker and go fishing.

What you need to do is take $100 and go play the 3-6 over at the casino. If you're good, you'll last awhile, if you're not, you'll get a good hour of entertainment. And then you'll know how good you really are.
