I am trying to decided between Ca18Det or Rb20det. The only reason is because I would like to go with a RB serires engine. Before you start the Ca18det isnt a RB engine but it was based on RB engine design. So anyway.

Ca18det = Further behind Front wheels and a better center of gravity.

I wanted to know if the RB20det is all that much bigger and heavier? I do not think the RB20det is as hard to wedge in as a Rb25 or 26 thats the part I want to make sure I have right.

I know the Rb20det is more of a bolt in affair than its bigger brothers.

If I am wanting to build a 240sx with a all round Handling / drifting setup is the RB20det have some of the same features as the Ca18det in term of engine placement and handling.

I am new to the Rb20det I have read tons about ca18det and Ka24de.. I'm just not a fan of the Sr20det...

Thanks..

The RB20 is about the same dimensions as the other RB engines.. So it's no easier or harder to "wedge" in the engine bay.

It is however.. easier to mount. You can either use custom mounts or a R32 xmember and the RB mounts. The RB20 trans also makes life a little easier since you can use a KA driveshaft.. the 25 and 26 require customer driveshafts to be made.

As for the question of bigger and heavier.. yes, the RB20 is certainly bigger and heavier than the CA is. Iron blocks and two more cylanders see to that.

What's your goal with the car? How important is that weight to you?

Not that it will have any impact on the weight issue, but the CA is iron block as well.

Ive always been a fan of the CA over the SR. Sure its lacking in displacement, but it has cam on bucket and a timing belt. The timing chain and rocker arms are the 2 main things I hate about SRs.

See, Thats the same way I feel, I perfer the Ca18det Head design and the belt over chains.

The car is going to be a Daily Driver / Drift Toy... I'm not looking to go pro or something I just want a all rounded machine. I was thinking Rb20det also because 6cyc means I can get more power with less stress and faster spool speeds.

The ca18det I was looking at for the weight savings and the it being further behind the Front wheels which = better handling. Although a 1.8 sounds small for a 2700 lbs 240sx ^_^ lol

I'm not a big fan of the Sr20det and If i am going to go some other way I guess its going to be smaller or Bigger lol. Although the RB20det is the same Displacement I still find pushing power on 6cyc is better than 4 lol... Although with ither engine I am very afraid of not being able to to find parts.

Ca's are old garbage.

Get a rb20 and you will love it!

Not many engines sound better than a straight 6.

Or are as smooth.

I was building a Ka-t before but I really DO NOT want timing chains...

They are way to expensive to replace and way to much trouble.

Timing belts so so so much easier.

What about parts though... Rb20det = NO us counterpart?

What???Timing chain= if it aint broke don't Fock with it.When your putting the motor in, if you feel you must change it do so.But then after that you never have to worry again.Chain is better than belt. all day any dayWell... except for a SOHC, those things eat up guides. lol

How much $$ do you want to spend??How much power do you want?

Cheapest way= KA-T or SR or you can mess with that CA thingie.. :-P

Any RB will not be cheaper unless your going for big power, then step up.

Parts are a pain sometimes but some are available.

I was building a KA-T and I had the block bored out and I was doing a fresh build. It would have been in the best intrest to replace the chains guides and Sprockets. Since It was going to be a 500+ hp engine. Then I started to price them and most kits are 350 to 450+ $ which at the time I didn't have so I couldn't finish the engine so i sold every thing :*(....

As for RB parts in America there wasn't a RB engine parts will come from so wont I have to order everything from over the pond.

86.0×71.7 wow didnt know the rb25det wasn't so square.

I don't know I might end up going with RB20det its a little closer to round at 78.0×69.7

Of course it wont be for a while until then I'll be riding on my SR20DE lol

How high can a RB20DET rev? in stock form. I hear the Ca18det goes pretty high 8k or so..

Which is something I'm kinda interested in I like to have a wide power band. When I was building my KA I didn't have the money to buy it but I wanted to redo the valve train. Because getting the power of the top band is kinda important for me.

RB parts in america are X-over parts like VG etc... and imported water and oil pumps, timing belts etc...

The Rb20 will rev out pretty high due to the sub honda stroke lol.But to get a wide power band you will have to match a turbo to it. Because low end is poop and if you get a turbo too big you'll have power up top and super lag.A turbo too small will die out up top.

Rb20 guys have been running GT30R's ($1,200 turbo) or T3/T4E's.

Checkout Skylines Australia for Dyno sheets and setups.

Well, I am going to find a coupe shell throw it in the garage and save up money to buy the engine. Be it Ca18det or rb20det.

I just have it narrowed down to one of those 2.

My girlfriend (Pretty much Wife) is from japan so getting parts, should be as easy as calling her sister and having them sent. (If her sister can figure out what I am talking about) LOL

I just cant decid which engine would best fit my needs and setup.

Ca18det is a good fit but doesn't have the power or Disp.

Rb20det has the power and disp. but not the weight and placement in engine bay.

I mean does handling in the 240sx change at all with the Rb20det in it? Since it sits further ahead of the front wheels and adds about 60lbs to the front wheels?

Well I have my rb20 mounted in with the R32 crossmember, and i cant really tell any difference. I also dont have any power steering, so if that makes a difference on how handling feels i couldnt tell you.

I did a RB20 b/c I wanted to do something that was not "normal"... and I love the straight 6 sound (stupid vanity)

If you want be "best bang for your buck engine package" for low $ and modest power goals... CA18 is the ticket. When my headgasket went I was very close to going CA18... but I have some development for my RB20 that I need to finish, so I'm sticking with it for now.

Use the money you save by not getting a RB25 or SR for suspension etc... you'll thank me later as long as you buy the right stuff. Check out the links in my signature if you want to see my setup. Just my .02

Well, I have basic suspension and everything taken care of Stech springs, KYB agx shocks, Cusco strut tower bars, Tien Camber plates in front, and rear Ksport camber arms.

See, I wish I could see the engines in person lol... The only thing I do not like about he Rb20det is the intake design. Anyone know anything about converting it or if you can buy a different one.

Rbsileighty, how does the over all package handle? Does it feel heavy does it have any nose dive problems anything noticeable?

I know the age old reply, Money can tell you how fast and all that jazz....

I don't know how much money I want to put into. I do not know how much I have... I mean when I started the Ka24DE-t project I started with 200$ and bought a engine off my friend and stripped it down and it set for 5 months... by the time i was done I had over 3.5k worth of engine parts and turbo gear sitting ready to be put together...

I am trying to decided which way to go before I worry about money.

The power also doesn't help pick because each power set also means different amounts of money.

Because I know a Ca18det isn't going to reach the same goal as a Rb20det.

So for a cross number I would say 300 to 400. Would be a good number anywhere in there would be fine.

Mine handles very well... but it is far from stock when it comes to the suspension... LOVE my Kei Office! Even without the cage the car handled very well.

Sounds like you want a RB20... if so... do it. Just read around the forum and you'll get a lot of your questions you have answered (quite a few guys have forward facing manifolds). I'd worry about cams before you started looking at manifolds though...

I'd argue that a CA18 could put down the same power as a RB20 without to much trouble and even with a similar investment in each motor...

I'm with rbsileighty the RB20 and the CA18 will put down very very similar power. CA18 has a larger stroke so will be a little more torquey.

Money is everything!!!!It's not a like a KA where you can just drive it till you have $$ for the turbo and other stuff.

You MUST have:Motorset or Front clip - $1200Wiring if you don't do it yourself- $250Mounts or Xmember- $250Clutch kit- $350Rear Main seal & Fron Trans seal- $30IC piping if you dont get the clip- ?? more $$Fuel pump- $90Other randomness- more $$$Turbo Dump pipe/Elbow- $$$

The things above at the VERY least.

Things you should do:Timing beltTensioner & IdlerWater pumpOil pumpCollar the crank since the motors out.Change all the Gaskets and hoses.Spark plugsFuel filterRemember the motor is anywhere from 89-93.There might be more can't remember.

Haha 3.5K I wish I spent that lol.But I did have problems at ever turn though. So I can't use my swap as a example

Yeah, I plan on getting a front clip. My friends dad owns a biz so i'll get it shipped there. My other friend orders clips from some please he told me to order though him and he can get me some money cut off the top.

The upfront amount will be just getting the front clip here. Everything else is one Part a time ^_^

I was also reading about the RB20DET and the RB26DET having some issue with the crank bearings. Or collar bearing or something I cant remember...

Anyone know anything about that?

The ca18det sounds so so so easy... Just do your basic engine prep work. Plop it in wire it up. everything lines up and everything is good to go :*(

Yep... and equal or more aftermarket support w/ less custom parts down the road.

...but if you want the RB... do the RB. For performance the CA is the right choice, but the RB isn't a bad one. Either way... do it right and do it once unless you are in it for the learning curve.

First and foremost start reading...

Rb20det has the power and disp. but not the weight and placement in engine bay.

If that doesn't SCREAM SR20DET, I don't know what does. Hell you're discribing exactly what that engine does, has the 2.0l displacment/power and the correct placement in the engine bay. These cars were designed to have the SR20 in them from the factory remember.

No joke!!!

The biggest difference is in the air pipes... intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds, downpipes, turbo elbows... SR stuff is like 1/4 the price of RB stuff..
