I just went to the dealer today to check out several problems and they said that in order to replace/repair my timing chain they would need $1500, and to fix the exhaust manifold, which is loose at flange and has no gasket, with the nuts rusted... would cost $1200 I also have to fix my right/front brake caliper because it is leaking to missing bleeder vlave.

My question is.. where can I find these parts myself for a cheaper price, because I might repair the car, or just trade it in for another car, or a 89' rx7 GTUs...

If you could please direct me to any site with the parts I'm looking for I would greatly appreciate it...

timing chain. if its the guides just remove it. cost you an afternoon in the backyard.

exhaust manifold you can buy nuts for home depot for a couple of bucks. and ask the dealer how much for the gasket alone.

right caliper bleeder valve missing? order that from the dealer too. or post on classified. there i saved you 2700 bucks. now you can use that money and buy a turbo kit or buy a sr20det front clip.

um.... you dont have the experience for a rotary. if you can't even fix an exhaust leak dont even bother with an rx7... you're going to have to tear that motor apart to replace apex seals.

The dealer didn't say anything about the guides, he just said that my timing chain was worn out. Other then that they just listed the parts I would need...

um... there's no such thing as a caliper bleeder valve, are you sure they didn't try to sell you any blinker fluid too? there is a bleeder screw that you can get at any parts store for under a buck and put in yourself. unless the old one is snapped in the caliper, in that case you'll have to get it out with an easyout or replace the caliper.

they probably just wanted to screw you on the timing chain because it's making noise, it's likely just the guides, which you can do yourself. there's a write up in the general chat section.

i assume you mean the gasket between the two sections of the manifold are bad, not between the manifold and head. if that's the case, just buy an upper manifold from a junkyard or here, someone has got to have one lying around. or just buy a hotshot and make it an upgrade too. the gaskets and nuts shouldn't be more than $20 from a parts store. you probably will need a new EGR tube though, those things always rust up.

that dealer is a rip off, don't go back there.

So I can buy a hotshot header to replace my current exhaust header?

As for the guides can I have a basic shop like midas, take out the guides for me... I don't trust the dealer anymore. And I don't have that much experience with cars. If I were to take out the guides, would my timing chain still be a problem in the future, or will it just delay the problem?

The dealer told me there wasn't a gasket, all they wrote down on the paper i requested was a flange gasket. As for the bleeder screw I'll stop buy a brake shop and to have them put it on...

All I have to say is that the Nissan Dealership I go to has treated me like sh**t.. First they told me that my car was a piece of sh**t and that I should junk it, then they mess up my car even more by basically killing my starter..

that sucks... I'm sorry to hear that. Luckily I have a great dealership that I've been to (did a great job on ordering me some special factory replacement parts and did the factory recall on my seatbelts efficiently (my only beef was that the button for the two seatbelt buckles was a slightly different shade of red/orange... but who cares...))

and to answer your question, yes you can buy a hotshot header for aroun 200 to 250 to replace your stock manifold. with the timing chain guides, first what year is your 240? b/c the older models (89 - 90) have an SOHC engine (that's single overhead cam) and the newer ones have a DOHC (dual overhead cam) - and w/ the guides the top guide on the DOHC engines often makes niose and it doesn't hurt to remove it... but you might want to replace the timing chain while you've got it apart (but if you're not mechanically inclined you might want to see if a local shop can do it for you). BUT if you have the SOHC engine there are no guides that can be SAFELY removed and often if it starts to make a good deal of noise you should replace the whole timing chain and everything......

I hope this is helpful and good luck!

I have a 92 240sx... The timing chain just started 2 days ago, but it very faint when I hear it at idle. For now, I'll just have the top guides removed, and worry about the timing chain later.

Thanks for your help

1 more question! What is an EGR Tube, and where is it located because I also need to have it replaced.

if it's just a faint noise, don't worry about it. you can put it off if you like. if there's a particular reason you want to change the timing chain other than noise, that's a different story. it's actually pretty easy if you follow the write up i mentioned earlier. if you're still unsure about it, find a friend that's mechanically inclined to help you. you can just remove the top guide but it's worth it to di in further to do both.

the EGR tube is a metal tube that runs from the exhaust manifold to the intake around the backside of the engine. the easiest way to see it is to stand by the driver's side wheel looking at the exhaust manifold. there is a tube about 3/4" in diameter coming from the back of the manifold near the firewall. if you find it, it will probably look alright, but the problem is taking it off. the nut is probably rusted solid to the manifold and it is very thin for some reason, it bends very easily. i suggest you order one and return it if you dont need it.
