Say you have your stock engine and you put 150K on it right? Then you swap out the old on for a new one with like 45K on it. Would your odometer still show 150K? How does it reflect your "true" mileage? Like say you wanted to sell the car and in the advertisement you put 50K after the new engine. Will the odometer still read 150,500?

Just asking.

I don't think the odometer cares about what engines you put in. I think it goes off of how many times your tires go around.

It is a FELONY to change the odometer reading downward and fraud to sell a vehicle with a tampered odometer.

But isn't that what people look at when you're selling it?

Just wondering.

My uncle was telling me how he met this guy who changed his odometer on his Accord to roll the numbers back. (This is in Canada though)

I was mainly concerned because I think I'd lose track of my mileage if it wasn't on the stock stuff.

the odometer reflects what the CAR has on it. last time I checked there was more to a car than the engine.

The only time I could see tampering with an odometer would be to adjust it to put a new odometer into a different car like if you swapped your IC.

Yeah. But when someone goes to buy a car, they rarely ask, "How many miles do these fenders have on 'em?"

I really meant more of the engine and transmission and other mechanical things.

I could add a little to what Wes said, there is a lot more to a car than the engine and the fenders. In a Q there are lots of little electrical parts that go out well before the engine and fenders do.

You know what? You're right.

I'm used to not having to deal with the complex electronics in a car. At least I was before I started driving a Q.

My whole issue with my HVAC display proves your whole point.

Hmm. Unless you're meticulous in recording every little detail and mile marker for things in the Q, I guess it would be pretty easy to lose track of what parts were done at what time.

I think I need to start making more of an effort to keep track of this stuff. The farthest I've gone is keeping all maintenance papers and receipts in the plastic sleeve my license plate came in. I keep it in the glovebox.

I think it would be ULTRA shady to do that. Like, you would be able to tell really easy if you adjusted the car to 60k miles and it had worn out seats, and rock chips from a bunch of highway driving, and stuff like that...

Really, the electronics in the Q are pretty solid...

A simple statement noting the motor only has 60K on it, is usually seen as a selling point. If you look through the 240sx listings here on NICO, you'll see a lot of people listing the chassis miles and engine miles separately.

The odometer measures how many miles that particular gauge cluster has on it.

So it's possible to purchase a new gauge cluster (From Joe?) with a blank odometer? Or at least be able to purchase one from a parted Q with less on the odometer than yours?

*Alarmed!*

Tell me it isn't so! People could be getting hosed out there.

See i dono if your state records your mileage or not but your mileage it somewhere and based on calculations state might get you for it like i got screwed with my 1997 Lincoln continental I bought off of a shop than the problems began and i noticed that it doesn’t add up transmission failing axles, electricals going engine is a bit shady and all that good stuff and one day I was cleaning the cluster area and realized its not level in there. The car felt older but I thought its just because of it being American no offense so i researched it and found that it had several oil changes at a jiffy lube starting at 105k and up to 118k but i bought the car with 76k I turned it into a case i got my money plus all the repairs I had to make and as for the dude haven’t seen him at his shop for the past year and with the money I bought a Q45 happy ending for me not for the guy.. And this is for real if someone wants to get you they will get you if they want to prove it bad enough don’t risk it your insurance company might even come after you since they keep track and make money off of you….

In the quiet words of the Virgin Mary... come again?

Only thing I got was that you had a Lincoln with a falsified odometer. What about insurance companies now?

That's what you get a carfax report for. It's not foolproof, but it's supposed to tell you if the odometer has been rolled back, among other things.

Do not trust CARFAX..... I traded my g20 in when I bought my Q ,with 147,xxx miles on it,looked near new{less than 6 years old} and a few months later I ran its VIN....and it showed 47,xxx miles on it! Somewhere, someone erased 100,000 miles off the odometer-whether it was the Infiniti dealer, auction house, who knows?Caveat Emptor

Well, I think I'm good. I don't plan on rolling back any numbers, or selling my Q for that matter.

But I think that my carfax report I got from the dealer might not have been as concrete as I had thought.

All I got was a detailed list of all state inspections.
