ok i heard that maaco does a point and shoot primer work and that is the reason many of the paintjobs come out ****ty is because of the way that they primer.... but they do a OK job painting the car....

if I was to spend about 2 weeks straight primering my car.. etc etc and making it ABSOLUTLEY perfect and then sending it off to maaco and getting one of there good paint packages.... would it turn out as a decent paint job?

definitely. Just make sure you get uniform color and enough clearcoat when they spray. If it runs or orange peels, some sanding and buffing will fix that right up. Just make sure you know what you're doing first. There's a lot that goes into prep work that you may not be aware of if you dont' have any experience with it. remember, the paint can be fixed, but you can't fix bad prep work. (without paying them to spray again)

I am not sure about maaco. I have also heard their primering is subpar, and that is why their paintjobs don't tend to last very long. But I also think it has something to do with the overall quality. The workers don't seem to care very much because they are not making a lot on the job. My friend got his car painted there and they painted right over bird crap and bugs and stuff. Of course, just like resturants I guess some of them are better than others. I have heard slipping the guy who paints your car a good bit of money you can get a good paint job (a good bit of money being $150 or more.) But there is always a risk...

i also suggest removing all possible trim, lights, etc... and masking yourself before letting them paint. Bad masking is also something common in lower end body shops.

bcar- wow painting right over bird crap? that's amazing...

yeah, my friend was totally pissed when he found it. It was only a smaller spot, not a huge bump, but the painter obviously didn't give a rats @$$ about what he was doing, their prep probably consisted of washing it down with a hose. We also found some scratches they had managed to get on there somehow before he picked it up. But I believe our Maaco is one with a badder "rep." He took it back and they redid it, but my friend still wasn't totally satisfied.

yeah they don't do any prep work. you should do it all then drive it over there. thats what i'm gonna do when i get mine painted. i'm going to tape most of it and drive it to maaco like that and probably tape the rest when i get there.

i definately second that. before i get my car painted, i am going to primer myself. i would also remove the trim and mask, because most people ive seen who have gone through maaco have had horrible overspray.

that and like spraying the carpet and stuff too. Basically getting paint where it shouldn't be through carelessness.

Maaco people get paid by the hour. Most of the time less than $10 a hour. No prep most of the time just depends on who ever is doing it. They like to paint stuff that should be painted like windows, weather stripping, trim, and etc. Every maaco job turns to crap in a year if it already doesn't look like crap when you get it. My friend and a co-worker had worked there before. Just a heads up.

I suggest painting it yourself. Believe me, it will be better.

I did mine not too long ago and it turned out wayy better than the Earl Scheib job on my previous 240. this is my car now

on my old 240, along with painting my car, they were nice enough to paint my exhaust, springs, shocks, headlights, and window.

Yea, I would do the same and do a very good job on prepping and taping your car. Like the old saying "You pay for what you get" and obvously Macco is probably one of the cheapest shop to get a paint job. I experienced it through my civic. I took the whole car in with normal wear and scatches on paint because I thought they are a paint shop, they must atleast do some dam sanding or something before paint "I know", nothing was taped. After the car was returned I thought it looked decent, the guy drove my car from the lot cause it was done a day ago so the front of the car looked decent but had dust all around but it was shinny though. Oh yea, they were also nice enough to overspray all my windows including rear and one side molding was paiinted and the other side was not. "HINT- bring a piece of cloth or something to whipe out the dust or take a good look at it, and remember to ask them, what is overspray, Good Luck!!

if You do the prep work yourself it should be "OK" I say this because all maaco does is mix the main paint with the clear coat as opposed to doing it in layers like they should. I had my brother's car painted by them after some girl at my high school sideswipped me hard enough to f-up the paint but not bad enough to damage the body. it turned out ok I suppose, but they didn't sand down the rock chips and subsequent paint filler in the front.

I'm going with the most professional job for my car. About 5 cans of Krylon flat black and she is set.

I say you:

Strip the car to the bare frame. Everything comes out, engine, interior, EVERYTHING that isn't frame/body panels.

All removable body panels should be taken off and sprayed seperately, to get the frame underneath them a matching color.

Strip all current paint off, and before you primer the car, you may as well do a little seam-welding on the chassis (I mean, how often do you have your car apart like this, may as well...).

Any car going to Maaco should go on the back of a tow truck. You're saving boatloads of $$$ on the paintjob, so you can afford to do it right. Give the guy there $50 before he starts and tell him that if it looks extra nice when it's done, he'll get another $100 in cash.

Re-assemble the car after the frame/body has been painted.

This is how I plan to proceed with my Datsun 510 if I don't sell it.

Well for all that work that you gonna do on the car + $50 +$100 +$tow truck +$maaco fees, you can easly go to a decent paint job place and get it painted nicely. I mean all they need for a good paint job is good masking, good cleaning, good sanding the rest is the same at every paint shop.
