Question about ka24de knock sensor

I know the knock sensor will retard timing and add fuel if it senses knock. But are there any circumstances under which it will only do ONE of those?

Don't think it would do just one it has to be both..cause one if it just does the retard timing and will still dump fuel so u be running rich and if it does the fuel and don't detect knock boom..That's what i'm thinking might be wrong but don't see other option..
