The manual of my M45 indicates that the adaptive cruise will fail if intense light (such as sunlight) shines directly into the sensor, this will cause the entire cruise display to flash, and the system will need turned off and back on. I am guessing the system is infrared (whether via laser or other light source) and there is not (and will not by its very nature) be a fix for this.
When it originally happened to me, I thought maybe it was caused by a radar jammer or something, as I was on a busy interstate, but having read the manual and since experienced this every day on my drive to work, I can assure you that it is nothing to worry about. I can also tell you that my manual tells how to use normal cruise control instead of adaptive, should the need arise.
What happened to Nomad32 includes a sound warning in mine, and require the driver to brake manually, this is probably only true on American models (due to ridiculous liabilities of doing business in America), additionally, the adaptive cruise is supposed to disengage if speed drops below 20 or 25, in this case I don't remember if there is a sound or not, but you will hear the car honking behind when you don't speed back up if you aren't paying enough attention (that is highly theoretical and not from experience). Obviously, both the battle of will scenario and the my car isn't going anymore scenario can be preempted by paying attention to your driving, which is not optional in any vehicle.
