That's not a dumb question. No one knows everything!
HID is an acronym for High Intensity Discharge. HID bulbs are bulbs that create light through an arc of electricity within the bulb, rather than creating light with a filament, which is what a halogen bulb (most common) does. If cars do not come stock with HID lights, you can purchase them after market. There are several advantages of purchasing an HID kit. The lights vary at temperature (measured in Kelvin) and lumen (measurement of light output). You can purchase HIDs at a variation of color/output combos. HID bulbs last longer than stock halogen bulbs and run at a lower amp than the halogen bulb. HID kits can be connected to your stock fixtures utilizing the HID bulbs and power ballasts for each light. These ballasts take the stock power supplied to your headlights (typically 12v), and produce a higher output level of typically 25,000v to support the brighter lighting system. Not only do HID kits create a safer, much brighter driving experience at night, but also add a great visual appeal to any vehicle.
A great example of HID within the Nissan family is the notable look of the Nissan Maxima's headlights, which burn at 6,000K. Similar lighting is found in the bi-Xenon 350Z, as well as the Murano.
