so the other day i was talking to my friend who just dropped an sr20 in his 240. So i was telling him how there really isnt many mods out for the 2.5 performance wise and that i would like to get my car to be faster. So he asked me if i could swap it out for the 3.5 engine or maybe some other compatible engine. I know ppl are gonna say "why didnt i just buy a 3.5" blah bah blah thats not answering my question. I just want to know if this would be possible and would it be worth it $ wise. thanks

It is possible, anythings possible.

Its a HUGE waste of cash though and would take a decent amount of time (you would need a 2nd car).

You could put a jet engine on a shopping cart if you wanted.. its just a matter of cost!

Hopefully i can be of some help.

How much do you think it would cost to swap the engine?id say at least 5 to 7k. There is more involved than just putting a new engine in. It would probably be cheaper to get a 3.5.

I have a 2.5 so i know what you are going thru.

If you got some money id say get some forged internals, and get a turbo. Im sure a shop would be glad to put one together for you. The 2.5 engine as it is now can only support 5 pounds of boost. If you got better internals you may be able to turn the boost up and get more power.

And if you need a quick fix you could go with

I've wondered about this too. Not that I'm actually considering doing it...I'd rather go FI as dldjros69 suggested.

A brand new crate VQ35 would cost between 5-7K, then the install time involved. My question is this...what kind of "extras" would you really need to get? The transmission between the 2.5 and 3.5 is the same...what else do we share?

springs at the front are different, rears are the same, dampers are different for the front and the rear.

the transmission is the same. if you really want to do this you better know someone at nissan that can with you organize this during the summer or a custom shop that has extensive knowledge of the VQ.

but seriously, just swap it with an 08 that has the 3.5 already. should be cheaper and way less stress inducing lol.

for the swap you are looking at lots of man hours of work and unless the guy is a really hard working and knowledgeable guy, you won't be satisfied and you'll potentially lose the warranty for the car.

way cheaper to swap the whole car now. no shame in doing it. remove all your mods and go see your dealer, then ask to be rapped of $5K for a 3.5 SE

Obviously I can't speak for the OP of this thread, but I absolutely love my 2.5 and have no desires to replace it with a 3.5. I'm the kind of person that'll keep a car until it dies. When I said that I was thinking of swapping the engine, it was more of a long-term consideration...like five or six years from now!

...that is, if the lady-boss will let me.

if its any type of engine other than the 3.5 that already exists in other altima coupes, you should go for it.... if its just a swap for the 3.5, its a waste

Maybe since the FX35 has a VQ35, a 4.5 from an FX45 or M would bolt up to our transmission also. That would be a cool swap.

I've seen VG30deTT motors on ebay with engine, transmission, turbos, computer and wiring harness (I was looking to do this to an old 240Z, 2,400lb car+300HP= fun) for around $1800.

My personal opinion is if you are not a die hard gear head, swapping an engine is not worth it at least 9/10. There is a ton of work that is involved with it. If you are putting in a VQ, then at least the chassis is relatively ready for it. I had a buddy of mine who had an 89 jetta, and started project about 6 years ago to put in an engine that was not specifically made for the VW and there was so much custom piping and exhaust work involved in it that after 3 years and so much wasted money he just gave up. Id would just recommend just purchase a used 3.5, or I don't know if there are any plans on a turbo coming out for the 2.5, but I think that would be the easier option then replacing the engine flat out.

my initial thought are it would be easier to de-mod yours, and trade it in for a 3.5.

Sure trading it in and taking a hit, vs buying an engine and installing it may be comparable price-wise, but which is going to give you less headaches and take 1/10th of the time?? gota ask yourself what your time is really worth to you and how soon you want to whip around with another 100hp

transmission is not exactly the same...drive ratios on them are different...
