I have never owned a q45 (y33 2000 107k) but was wondering are the doors supposed to stay open with some kind of catch mechanism or do they just swing freely? In most of my other cars the door has some type of catch when fully open so it doesn't close on you when your trying to get in and out, I would think the y33 has this but none of my doors exhibit this option. If it does how do you adjust? the FSM shows nothing. Thanks for any and all info

There is a door check located about half way between the hinges. I'm not sure that the tension is adjustable - maybe they need to be replaced? It's shown on BT-14 of the service manual. For some reason I can't open the '00 manual, but it's the same in the '99 and '00.5 manuals.

Ok I see it; (bt-19 FSM) well it looks like a wear item all my doors are non functional I wonder if to much lube will cause malfunction or maybe they need more of it? I will investigate and see what I find.

Never can have enough lube...(sic haha) I was looking at the assembly and I think its some type of friction spring clamp that holds the runner bar if it is to lubricated it will loose the ability to hold and or the spring is shot if there is a spring. I looked at another y33 last night all the doors have lost the ability to lock open also but in the FSM it calls for lubrication.

Wear item. I should have done a write up. Basically, the door panel must be removed and the door speaker removed to access the old units and replace them with the new ones. Gaskets are not included with the new stays.

Thanks Maxnix.
Damn door panel removal sounds like a PITA, was hoping it was just those three bolts. Are the gaskets reusable or just use RTV? Any idea where to get the stays for a decent price? Thanks again your a wealth of knowledge

The gaskets are a flat dense foam. Ask for them. I got my stays from Joe. Door panel is easy off if you follow FSM. A little tougher going back on. Trim tools help immensely over rag on screw driver method suggested in FSM.

Can't these be taken apart and re-greased like the 1990-1996 Q45 door checks?

I don't know. have not taken it out yet, not sure if they become non functional due to wear or lack of maintenance. Can the 90-96 be made to work again(rebuilt) or does something wear out that makes them fail and have to be replaced with new?

Sure can, but they still won't hold the door open.

To hold the door in an open position on level ground?

The point is, the old ones cannot be reconditioned, at least as far as I know. If they can, lubrication of the stays is not the answer, I am sure.

Ok so they are just to keep the door open, and the lubrication is so they slide easy but lube has nothing to do with checking the inward motion of the door. I have 4 on order so we will see, I may take one apart and see about reconditioning maybe throw up a walk-through if I can get them functioning again in regards to the checking door progress.

has anyone tried using a dremel drill to grind the detentes deeper on the check stays? after many years, they seem to become rather shallow. on the 960 volvo the springs usually just fracture, on the the bmws, they seem to smooth out or the door panel attachment site fractures(very thin metal without support backing) The new 750 bmw or mercedes have sophisticated electric brakes that hold the door open until read y to be moved. no more bruised shins....
