I plan to re-paint my grill this weekend after removing the emblem and filling the hole with Bondo. Because the grill is plastic I just plan to clean it off really good with alcohol and ensure there is no dirt on it.

#1. Because I am using Krylon fusion it does state that there is no need to sand or prime. I have used this stuff and it is rock solid. Any of you have problems doing straight painting on to the surface?

#2. When clearcoating, shoudl I use something like Duplicolor gloss coat or can I get away with using Krylon gloss coat?

The grille has the chroming done on the outer top and bottom of the grill from production, but don't see any problems that would happen if I just did a straight Fusion paint over.

I'm not a car expert so I just wanted to consult here to see what some of you have to say about that. I am experienced in making things such as art and personal movie props or things like that, but not automobiles.

Thanks for your help!

I've painted with Fusion with great results but, hated that I was limited to their poor color and finish selections so now, when I paint and I'm looking for a closer to oem appearance, I use SEM or DupliColor trim paints.

Despite what Fusion says on the can, I still scuff what I'm painting with 600 or 800 grit (no primer needed). Also, scuff the chrome trim and prime it before hitting it with the Fusion.

I painted my old Stanza beater's chrome grill w/o a problem.

P.SPlease post pics before and after.

Edit:What color and finish (flat, satin, gloss...) are you using? Fusion is so rad, clear coating ain't all that important. Stick with the Krylon brand for clear but, still do a test to see if the paints are compatible.

The krylon scratched off easily unless I used an automotive grade color over it (even with Dupli-color's enamel, which IS a must BTW). Good luck. and you do want to scuff it, and make sure you scuff the hell out of the chrome accents, they take less easily to being painted. (I found no need to prime other than with the krylon, even on the shiny bits and I've painted my grill and all my emblems.)
