so i bought black tails (painted, not overlay) and had to remove them due to a ticket i got for them, my question is: if i were to get bright WHITE bulbs, do you think that would compensate for the darkness so the RED would be visible through the paint? any recommendations.

I don't think so, the glass on the taillights is too thick to be affected by ANY LEDs. You're better off buying those already blacked out housing taillights of Ebay.

Without seeing them I can't be sure, but I don't think there would ever be enough red visible through the paint to pass the law. Maybe you could just remove a circle of paint directly behind the bulb. You could probably find out exactly the tailight red legal diameter. If you're careful, it could come out decent; if not, you're getting rid of them anyway. I not sure if there's a solvent safe for that lens plastic, but I might try scraping with a sharpened stick of wood or even my finger nail. I also might try putting a circle of tape down, rubbing it in, leave for a day, & pulling off. Success depends a lot on the type of paint & how it was applied & cured.(and how meticulous & patient you are).

I tinted my tailights with vinyl film and got a ticket for it. I looked it up and in my area, (socal-pasadena) it's illegal to modify the tail lights in any way unless it has been tested and approved by a testing lab. I removed the tint and got it signed as a corrected ticket but it's still in my record so the next time i get caught, its a $500 ticket. I just gave up on the tint and now I'm back to stock and I'm planning on taking the housing apart and blacking out the chrome reflectors and using LED rings and strips for the entire tail light assembly.
