Yes, you're right, the car just doesn't have that feature. So it's not a problem with the locks. Nissan, for whatever reason, didn't start adopting that feature until around 2007...any Nissan older than that won't have it. That's actually one of the most common questions I see asked (and that holds true across pretty much all Nissan/Infiniti models), so I'm not sure why it took them so long to get with the program.
And yes, the clock does have a backlight. Replacing it is actually not that bad. You need to remove the center vents and radio surround (it is simply held in place by metal spring clips, best way to remove them is to pry with a flathead screwdriver wrapped in cloth so you don't scratch anything). The hazard light button will come out with it Once those are removed you'll see two screws holding the panel that holds the clock. Remove those and you can get to the clock.
