Hello everyone,

I have a question for all you folks since maybe you have some expiences similar to mine. Let me say that I purchased a brand new G35 about a month ago. The car has been running great and last Friday 8/15/08 the check engine light comes on. Knowing that cars are pretty sensitive the first thing I do is go and check the gas cap to make sure my wife tightened it properly as she was the last person to the fill the car up with gas. I went and drove it about 50 miles and the light was still on so I took it to the dealership last Saturday.

On Monday morning I get a call from the service department and they inform me that the diagnostics they ran indicated the gas cap was loose. So on Monday I go and pick up the car after work, no problems. Over the next few days the car is driving perfectly and on my way to work yesterday the check engine soon light comes on again. I then call the dealer, and drop it off last night for them to service today.

I got a call about 3 o'clock today and the service manager tells me that the diagnostics they ran indicated the perch canister was faulty. What is the perch canister and what is the liklihood that it would go out this early in a brand new car?

I am trying to remain positive about this situation as the dealer is not charging me a penny for any of this and they are giving me a free loaner car but man it's getting frustrating.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

smitty1515

Welcome to Nico. Glad to hear about your new G.

By "purge" canister, I assume they are referring to the charcoal canister. That is part of the emission system. It is more or less a storage unit for fuel vapors to accumulate in when the car isn't running. Each time the car starts, the engine purges the canister and burns the vapors thus keeping them from venting to the atmosphere. It's about as benign a system as there could ever be on a car and even if it's not working correctly, the car still runs fine. It looks like a little plastic box about the size of a cigar box with a few hoses running to it.

Thanks for the replies. I hope this fixes the problem.

Another questions I was wondering is what is the difference between running 91 and 89 octane? Is it just a subtle difference in mpg and hp?

Here is a few pics of my baby:

the higher the octane the slower the fuel burnsits to prevent detonationa higher compresion car would be beter to use 91 b/c higher compresion equals more heat and if you put a lower octane fuel whcih burns quickly it would ignite the fuel mixture before the designated time its supose to resulting in detonationas far as hp it depends on your compresion ratioi think the g35 runs a 10.3 ratio so it would be best to use a 91 octane rating

Nice ride, I say its a fluke as I have never heard anyone else have this problem.

Kind of hard to tell in the picture, did you get the slate blue??

Yes, I got slate blue with 18" wheels. Black leather interior with premium package. I couldn't be happier with my car minus these two goofy things.

The G will spoil you for any other car other than an Infiniti. The VQ engine is so smooth, quiet and strong. The AT is one of the best ever made. It's smooth and quiet. Wait until you've had the G a year and then drive another car. Nothing else has the same personality as the G.

You made a good choice.

Oh, with the VQ35HR, you can run 87 if you're in a pinch. 91 isn't all that much more and it is the fuel the engine was designed to run on.

I have only two complaints about the 07+ G. Its fuel economy isn't as good as it could be, and it is one of the more expensive cars to insure. Both of those are relatively minor complaints.

I've been in a pinch since day one.
