From what I read, the transmission in the '91 Q is not supposed to have an external cooler or filter, is this correct?

Right, but many early Q45s quietly got transmission replacements under warranty... Go in for an oil change, come out with a new transmission and a half-*** cooler. The replacement trannys also gained a drain plug in the pan, if I recall accurately.

I remember reading something about how that was not reliable. Apparently the transmission was replaced, but it may or may not have come with a drain plug depending on what Infiniti had laying around the replace it.

IN any case, Jesda was right about the half-assed cooler. Aftermarket cooler = highly recommended.

I have changed trans pan gaskets on 90 & 91 and some do have drain plugs and some don't but, the pan itself takes a different trans pan gasket! Different bolt pattern!

If it was updated by the dealer.

Thanks for the replies, guys. So the cooler is the two-row one right in front of the transmission pan? And the filter is the one up on the radiator fan shroud? This may explain why no one could find an external filter for the '91 Q. What year did they come like this from the factory, and will any of the parts stores have this filter? This is my mom's car that I've been driving for about a month. I am selling it for her. She bought it certified used in '93 or '94 and is the second owner. I guess this is one of the early ones that got the transmission replaced before she bought it, because she's never had it replaced. I'll put an ad up in the classifieds section.

Right, I have the same thing (92). Documentation of Infiniti replacing transmission (with 2 row cooler by pan at 50K), radiator, fan shroud, lines with can size external filter up by radiators' right side, ECU, and TCU. Might be able to get that exteral filter thru Joe. Hope this helps.
