im getting water into the hatch area in my 91 240 and narrowed it down to leakage from the lights. it was a ***** trying to get them out cause they were rtv'd in. i was wondering if it came from the factory like this or if the previous owner used rtv to seal it.

It comes like that from the factory.. I don't think it's actual RTV though but some other sealant. Are you sure it's coming from your tailights. do you have the stock spoiler? That is usually a major problem area with water in the hatch area.

The seal from the factory is butyl rubber, which you can purchase at almost any auto parts store. It is a pain in the *** to work with; lighter fluid, or gasoline, helps out quite a bit, along with quite a bit of heat (a heat gun is great, a hair dryer is OK too) when installing the lights again to ensure a quality seal.

i do have a stock spoiler. and if thats the problems is there any recommendations for fixing this temporarily. i can shave the spoiler if necessary but i hate doing bodywork when its cold and rainy. lots of duct tape?

You should be able to lift the spoiler a little bit to reveal the problem holes(my hatch has already started to rust and leaks when it rains). As a temporary fix you can use tape but it may not hold very long. I suggest ditching it and fixing the holes as soon as possible.
