Yes, I started out at Birmingham Internation Raceway(NASCAR sanctioned track), in 1982. I was a wrench turner. We started in the Street Stock division, with a 1973 Monte Carlo, then went through a 1970, 1972, and then a SWEET 1972 SS, with pristine black leather interior. I hated ripping that car apart (like the Monster Garage show, where they stripped an original SS El Camino).
Spent a lot of time at local Alabama tracks, helping many drivers, building cars, pit crewing, and drinking a lot of beer. I got t oknow the Allisons, fairly well. Hut Strickland and Davey Allison intorduced me to my, then future wife, at Daytona, in 1988.
In 1987, we bougth a 1984 Dodge Daytona, that had been prepared for the NASCAR Daytona Dash Series. It was underpowered, but had a great speedway body. The driver, Roger Reuse (we met in High School) could hold the throttle wide open, and drive around the top of the track, while everybody else, with HP, had to brake in the turns. We were not too competitive, but had a great time.
In 1989, we started building a Pontiac (this was the dominant car, with the "Iron Duke" engine. We got over 300 HP, from the 4 cylonder, with a Holley 500 CFM 2 bbl carb!
Roger ran in the top 5 most of the time, if he didn't wreck. I recall he had one Bush Pole award, and his highest finish was 2nd. The series was too expensive, for a no sponsor team, and there was not enough air time, for big name sponsors. We struggled along, with little or no money, for a few years, on our knowledge, hard work, and Rogers driving skill.
I quit the team, because of a dispute with the owner (he actually fired me, then apologized, but I left anyway), in 1989.
Roger still races, and I occasionally talk to him, but have not gone to a race, in 15 years.
