Alright, I'm a guy who just wants quality sound from his car. I don't want to have a rumbling system, just to be able to listen to my rock without distortion. So I have a '90 240sx coupe. I don't know what kind of head unit I want or even if I want to replace the backs or what kind of difference it will make. I would prefer to have 6.5" three ways so I dont have to cut up my doors and I will do the plate mod, which doesn't look too hard. Other than that, I'm not wanting to cram my trunk with a box or spend too much money ($500 MAX). Thanks for any help that anyone can provide to this total car audio noob. And yes, I've searched for a few days and havent really found any definitive answers. Also, please leave some examples of good speakers because I have nooo clue other than the consumer reviews I've seen.

Ok, for good affordable sound quality go with CDT 6.5" components....CL-61a should be the part number, 150 shipped from http://www.thezeb.com. Umms if you want straight imaging you can simply remove your rear speakers, and play with the 6.5s, so you'd be set driver wise. Is 500 your limit for the whole system or just the sub setup? Cuz 500 is kind of iffy for a head unit, speakers, sub, box, amp, and amp kit...but we'll see =) Do you want to be able to play mp3s from your head unit, or does it matter? I can suggest a few subs, Adire Audio's Shiva puts out some amazing sound if you build the right size enclosure for it, they're very inexpensive, and they play well of relatively low power. I'd say build the box yourself if you're confident with woodworking and carpetting it, it'll save you some money, and leave you with enough wood for the speaker adaptors, with some left over. A quality amp kit (4 gauge is what I've always used) will run you $30 here http://www.knukonceptz.com/pro...OLAK4

Let me know what you mean by no more than $500, and I can help you more.

I don't think I want subs...I don't want that rumbling power...no need for the music I listen to or so I think. The only problem with components is I'll have to cut my doors, but I guess I can live with that. I was hoping just that a three way speaker would put out decent enough sound so I wouldn't have to start hacking away at my panels...we'll see I guess. I'll try to catch you on AIM sometime.

buy a decent head unit that has crossover capability so you can fine tune your setup... make sure it has preouts so you can upgrade later if wanted... since you're on a budget check out ebay for used decks... my brother just picked up a $250+ deck for $90 plus shipping and it is in great condition and has all of the abilities i was talking about above. that will then give you at least $300 to spend on speakers... you wont have a seperate amp for the speakers but it'll still sound good if you have a good head unit. i would reccommend a kenwood kdc-x579 or something comparable, so you have full upgradeable capability for later and you have crossovers and such also... like i said you will then have a good $300 for speakers. you can pick up a really good set of speakers for that. some speakers you would think are out of your range will be in your range if you just forget about the factory warranty and get them online or at ebay or wherever. you could probably pick up some boston rally's for the front and some decent others for the back... here i even did some research for you on ebay... go to these links for head unit:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...&rd=1for front speakers: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...&rd=1for rear speakers:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...=WDVW

this is just an example... you could find something better i am sure... but this took me all of 5 minutes to research... don't make the mistake of trying to buy everything brand new at a retail store... you will get nothing likewhat i have listed above and you will be disappointed once you find out what you are missing out on... i made the mistake of buying some boston pro series speakers for retail..... i could have gotten them for much less but at the time i was in the same position you are in... being a newby... any more questions post up and ask again...

make sure the used decks come with their harness some people are shiesty and sell them without...ebay a$$holes. I know you said you didn't want a sub but if you really want the bass guitar and kick drum to stand out a single 8''-12'' with minimal power would sound great and a .75cuft box for an 8 takes up only a tiny bit of your trunk. Unless your haulin bodies, potting soil, concrete you'd be in good shape;)

btw can never go wrong with cdt. peace out beaches
