The LS8 and I had a string of bad luck a few months ago, and after a run-in with an oblivious Acura driver, I lost a side mirror to a construction cone.

I grabbed a black one at a junkyard to tide me over, and it honestly looks pretty good--I kind of like it (all the LS's greenhouse is black-trimmed, so if the other mirror wasn't white, I doubt anyone would ever notice anything out of place).
BUT, the black mirror lacks the "puddle light" that most LS mirrors have which illuminates the ground next to the car. So I picked up another mint condition used mirror with puddle light, and it's the wrong color (very slightly: there's a sort of pearl tan that I've seen very rarely, and these are that color. Mine's pearl white. Apart from the car, it looks the same, but on the car it's clearly wrong--and I can't fake the tan like I can the black).

Anyway, to the point:
I want to repaint both side mirrors since the good one was shot-peened by road debris and then badly touched up before I ever bought the car and has bothered me ever since.

Do I need to have this done at a bodyshop, or can I do it myself and make it look good (not just okay)? Remember this is a metallic pearl white, so I expect it to be very easy to screw up.

Other question: do I go black or body color? (examples below--and yes, I know she needs a bath)

This place has AWESOME rattle can touch up paint. I painted an entire fender with one can of basecoat and 2 cans of clear. It looks like it was sprayed out of a gun. I also painted the mirrors and spoiler on the G35 with their stuff too. Highly recommend.

I like the black trim. Reminds me of when the first years of the 4th gen Camaros did that. Clean lines.

IMO, its best to do all the prep work yourself and then have a body shop make it up. Knock out the sanding, filling, priming, sanding and that'll drop your cost. You'll also likely do a better job than they will at that part. The only downside I can see is that they miiiiiiiight charge you for more paint than they'll actually use.
In my experiences, you can make something looks really good doing it yourself, but eventually it fades and isn't as lustrous as it used to be.

He's talking about painting mirrors... not painting the whole thing or anything that would involve a body shop.

Buy the touch up paint in the aerosol cans from the site above. I bought metallic paint for the Pathfinder from them and it looks as good as any body shop could do. You would spend less than $75 to repaint both mirrors and would look like new. You'll need 1-2 cans base coat and 2 cans of clear. May want to prime them too, but that optional. 2 coats of base, 3-4 coats of clear. Wet sand with 1500 grit between base and clear coating for the best finish.

I think I'll give the touch-up cans a try. I have a spare set of mirrors so the only risk is throwing away $75 and being disappointed. I think it's worth a try.
