You can't do too much with throttle tuning in these cars, believe me I have been trying for a good 6 months to find the right tune. You can get a real snappy throttle but then you get lots of bugs and shift stalls. We really need more testing and support from UpRev.

Having owned both, I would much more have the Infiniti. I can't tell one BMW from another anymore. Too many badges. My brother was driving my Q the other day and a big corvette motor driven Suburban tried to take him out. We were laughing so hard. Put a corvette motor in a school bus and try to take my Q on. It was good for a laugh. If I put twin turbos on my V8 I'd probably be pushing 1,000 hp. Where do I get such turbos?
Not sure what you're getting at. You can make any car have 1,000hp with enough work. And the Corvette motor is not, nor has it ever been put in a suburban. There are several variants to the LSX platform. Touching on some of your other posts, the dealer can't tune your car. You'd have to contact an UpRev dealer and have them do it.
There is no such thing as a supercharger you can turn on and off. Superchargers are belt driven. Stillen used to make a roots type blower for the VQ35, not sure if they have one for the newer cars.
Forced induction is not necessarily harder on a motor. There's a lot of factors that go into reliability. There's plenty of factory turbocharged or supercharged cars that make it over 200k miles. In my opinion, currently being an Infiniti tech with a long history of building race cars, your best bet would be to throw a shot of nitrous on your car.

Did you turn off the VDC? Even if you do turn it off I believe there is still another ECU controlled slip prevention system.

You def can't do a brake stand if thats what you are trying to do, the ECU keeps you from doing that with the brake on.

On the Y50, there was a way to 'crash' the system but I only did it once lol by accident in the snow...probably bad for it. Basically, if I recall correctly, you turn the wheel all the way in a stand still and then MASH the gas. If it can't catch grip, the VDC system will crash and stay off until you restart the car.

I think the M45 guys made a switch to disturb the brake sensor connection at the base of the pedal. From what I remember seeing you have to turn the car off and back on to reset the system afterwards though. Theres a youtube video somewhere of a guy doing it in an M45.

The ls7 today and old ls1's basically share the same block architecture just other changes were made to the design such as windows cast into the block between cylinders, improved main web strength and bay to bay breathing, an intake manifold and MAF-sensor with higher flow, a camshaft with higher lift and more duration, a higher compression ratio of 10.5:1, sodium filled valves, and a revised oiling system better suited to high lateral acceleration.[3] LS6 intake manifolds were also used on all 2001+ LS1/6 engines.
Did you cut and paste that from the LS wiki page? The LS6 changes were just some small but decent improvements to the already great LS1 design. It was the heads and cam that made the power difference. LS7 is quite different and does not share any parts, except maybe exhaust manifolds. LS1/6 is considered gen 3 and LS2/3/7/9 are gen 4. Many little things will interchange but not the same engine. Also the LS6 was in older CTS-V's, LSA is what is in 09 and up.
jmissile wrote:So if remember correctly, the first c5 zo6's with the ls6 were 5.7L and very similar in capacity to our v8, so fast forward about 15yrs and gm has refined the Ls platform to a level that our vk engines will pathetically have to wait for probably another decade at least if we're lucky enough that they don't stop putting v8 's in Q's altogether.
The LS is a great engine but not refined at all compared to the VK. LS is pushrod OHV, VK is DOHC, direct inject, variable intake and timing. The reason the LS has more potential is because the VK is already finely tuned from the factory, not a lot left on the table. The LS however, is made for drivability and leaves a lot for the end user to do. Full bolt ons make a nice difference already, plus a heads and cam swap will easily give 500 or more at the wheels, all while getting good gas mileage.

It's all apples to oranges but if you want huge power and you like the M/Q, LS swap it like every other car!

I believe at the end of the day the 5.6 will be phased out. (I am sure I read this somewhere) The future I believe will be the twin turbo v-6 being debuted in the Q50 red.

I imagine the 5.6 will be replaced with a version of the 3.8 used in the GTR

5.6 will probably stick around, at least for the QX80.

The original plan was to use the 3.8 TT in the Q50 and just slightly detune it. I'm kind of disappointed it ended up only with a 3.0 TT.

The V8 will never go, unless they give up on getting themselves into Cadillac, BMW and Mercedes territory. Big boy cars have many, many cylinders. Anything below 8 is considered an economy car regardless of the HP it may put out. Big boys like big cars with big pots to fill with gasoline. Why? It must because there is no replacement for cubic displacement. Just look at yesterdays and todays S8's, V8's, V12's and W16's.

True, the V8 will probably stick around for the trucks and SUV's but look at the Ford GT, turbo V6. Corvette has also been toying with the idea for future models. Plus Camaro and Mustang both have added turbo 4's to the line. V8 may not be gone but definitely reduced.

Maybe we should go back to motorcycle cars like Morgan or the Sling Shot. Personally I wouldn't mind. They were widely used in hard times. The average person doesn't know what's under the hood so "turbo" and V6 to them sounds like gas mileage. Plus the Government has mandated certain MPG's by a certain year so smaller engines will be pushed and advertised as a wonderful thing. Pretty soon only the dealer will have a key to unlock the hood. There is not much the old backyard mechanic can do under the hood anymore unless he knows the workings of a highly sophisticated mechanical device and the computers used to run them. Oh well, time to buy an old carburetor muscle car?

I reckon that since they can get the same or even more performance with just 6 cylinders, car makers don't see the need for an engine that heavy or large taking up space under the hood and returning less mpg. When I looked at the new Jag ZF, they have a 3.0 liter V6 that makes 340hp / 332 torques and goes from 0-60 in 5.1 seconds while returning 30 mpg hwy. The supercharged 3.0 liter makes 380hp.
To your point, a V8 will make more hp and torque, no doubt. But the majority of consumers want a sport sedan that moves quickly AND returns what is deemed respectable mpg. Clearly, most if us are 'above' the average consumer and want more than 'average' power and we don't really care all that much about mpg. We're willing to pay for our kicks. Our problem is we are NOT the majority and it's the majority (and the Gov) who drive the trends.
I reckon over the next few years, many, many more specialty mechanics and shops will spring up in more places and they will offer programs or even add-ons to the current models to produce hp and torque that that results in low mpg not allowed by the Gov in the production of the original engine. Those specialists and shops will be the only way to get it and it will come at a high price.
We can still drive a Mad Max vehicle, but it will cost us plenty, LOL.

Larz,

As usual I agree with much of what you said. Many things pop into my head when I read your posts. One is when are diesal engines going to get into the performance game? I wonder how long it is going to be before we have to mix our own fuel to keep our mad max machines running? Just in my short life span we have gone from low powered big cars, to high powered muscle cars, to small high MPG cars, now we are back to high powered and high mileage cars. What's next? I agree that it will cost us a lot to stay with high powered V8's. Maybe we should just buy all the Hell Cats we can find because they will become classics like the old finned high powered luxury cars of the 60's. Cadillac once had a 500 cubic inch engine. Need to get me one of those before they are all gone. LOL.

I don't want to get 'oof topic' on you, but ... You mentioned the Cadillac 500 engine. I have been restoring a 1968 Cadillac Fleetwood for a few years now and I am bonkers over it. Mine has the 472 engine. Here are the stats:
472 CID V-8 / 7.7L
Bore and Stroke: 4.30 x 4.06 inches
Compression Ratio: 10.5:1
Brake Horsepower: 375 @ 4400 rpm
Torque: Max. 525 ft.-lbs.
Carburetor: Rochester Quadrajet 4V

I posted about it a while back: my-other-car-t587139.html?hilit=

Larz,

You are making me very jealous. Very nice caddy. Exactly what I want. Or I would take a big Lincoln with the suicide doors. Either would be fine by me. A convertible one would be even better. Almost bought a caddy convertible in excellent shape for $21,500 last weekend. Kicking myself I didn't bid on it. One of my other cars is a 2005 retro T Bird. Its 1 of 1,500 of the actual special anniversary editions. Different car than a caddy or Lincoln but still a nice ride for 2 people. Maybe I'll sell the T Bird and get one of those big road boats. They just don't make them like that anymore and probably never will. Any interest in my AWD, V8, fully loaded q70?

LOL. I might trade for an Eldorado in a year close to mine. I check Mike Stanton's website from time to time as he is a great collector of these. Here is a good example:

Thanks. Now I am going to go nuts looking for a nice clean older car. One that is a keeper, sleeper for a long time. The Rivera is awesome. One I like is the 60 Bird Convertible with the rare 430ci engine.

Roots style supercharger for 5.6 liter Nissan Armada. Same platform as Infiniti 5.6. I'm thinking. Take off your hood. Cut a hole for clearance. Reshape it. ZL1 style or a cowl. You have something very custom.

You will likely need a custom intake manifold since the Armada had the VK56DE until 2016 which has standard rail injectors, not the VK56VD direct-inject like the M56/Q70/QX80 have had since 2011.

So sounds like the intake manifold on the armada won't line up to the m56 or q70?

Just FYI There is a company in Australia that builds a supercharger that bolts on to the VK56VD in a Nissan Patrol...Same as a QX80 or 2017 Armada.

VK56 is here to stay for a while...Atleast in trucks.

I have to say though, mine does very well on fuel. I drove 350 miles yesterday and stayed between 75 and 85 mph most of the way, only slowing down for road construction and traffic. Averaged 78 mph for the first 250 miles while averaging better than 28 mpg. This picture was taken prior to my first stop.

If you want more power do the custom exhaust drop in filters and intake tubes and tune everyone else does . If it's not enough start with a 50 shot.

The transmission will likely not last long at significantly higher than stock power levels . The supercharger kit costs 10k and isn't even for this car by time you have it actually on your car and working and having the transmission built the parts and labor costs would be like 20k . Then you would be hoping the motor can take it . Better off buying a different car that is more powerful stock or known to be good to modify.

But if you love the car that much would love to see it. Someone needs to be the guinea pig or nothing will ever come out and be affordable for us

DredM56,

After reading all the posts and looking at all the alternatives I came to the some conclusion as you. I to think I am better off buying a different car. That's too bad for me as I would like to increase the HP of the Q by about 100HP. I would want the option of turning on the extra 100 when I want it. Too bad for me this car is not the one to mess with. But, the 420HP it does have when you get it cranked up with the AWD will make you pay attention to what you are doing. I have been out in the country driving the roads and wound this car up and it is fast and handles like a train on rails. If you are not a PRO driver this car can scare the crap out of you if you push it to its limits. I am going to just leave it alone for now.
