I have a 2014 Q60 Convertible IPL. Last week the passenger airbag light starting blinking. I tried the common fix noted many times on the boards (using the start button to reset 3-4 times) but it didn't work. So I brought it to the dealer and they said a new part needs to be ordered and the cost will be over 7K. Is this possible? Their explanation was that everything is controlled by a part in the passenger seat, and that part needs to be fully replaced. Is this really possible? TIA

Airbag components, unfortunately, are only covered under the original 3yr / 36k mile warranty.

Find out the part number, and post it up. We may have a source that cost less.

I'd be looking at car-part.com to find one in a wrecking yard. Do a nationwide search - the cost of shipping would be miniscule compared to what they're asking - that's nuts.

This was the written description - "Passenger seat adjuster assay in inoperable internal failure; must order part".

But since the seat is fully functional, Is purchasing this $7,500 part really the only solution?
Thanks!

I'd ask them for clarification. You can be very blunt with them: What part is inoperable on my car, and what is the Nissan part number of that part that you wish me to spend $7500 to replace.

If they won't answer you, time to speak to the service manager.

If the "passenger seat adjuster assembly" is functioning, they need to tell you specifically which part they believe to be nonfunctional.

Let us know what you learn!

The "part" is probably the entire seat. Same thing on my 08 G sedan and I was told the seat sensor is broken, but can't replace just the sensor. Quote was around $5000. I hear there may be a method of adjusting/lubricating the sensor but haven't explored that yet.

For now my fix is black electrical tape over the two lights. But I think it means the passenger airbag will not trigger, so I would feel slightly guilty if I have a wreck with a passenger...

Does it blink continuously, or start out blinking and then go solid? If it's continuous, then you may have a control unit that's stuck in "diagnostic mode" and there will be a procedure to reset it. If it goes solid, please post the codes it's throwing and I'll be happy to evaluate it. Most of the late model N/I products have their OCS sensors in the seat tracks and not the cushion, and Nissan recently offered service parts for many of them in lieu of a whole new seat frame.

I got a chance to look your ride up in ASIST today, and the bad news is the dealer wasn't lying. Both versions of the Q60 have "mat" type OCS systems built into the lower seat cushion and N/I does not sell any service parts, the entire lower frame has to be replaced. Before you do that, I'd suggest having someone yank the seat bolts and carefully inspect the seat harness for chafing or pulling, many OCS issues turn out to be wire failures from broken harness restraints or incorrect harness routing.

That said, if the seat is bad, a good junkyard seat is your best option. Exact prices for a new frame depend on your option package and color, but all versions list for around $6500~$7500. You can save about $2K off list through an Infiniti-authorized online vendor like InfinitiPartsDeal, which would still come with a factory parts warranty if installed by a dealer. The good news (if there is any) is that it shouldn't be a big labor charge. The frame comes upholstered, so changing it should only be a 2~3 hour exercise.
