Q45tech,

At least a few times I have read references that you have made to spare parts that you carry with you.

I have a 92 Q45 with 110K miles. What would you recommend that I carry with me "just in case"?

Thanks,Ken K

I always carry with me: A spare alternator and water pump belt (saved the one I took off when i did my belts), spare fluids, a MAF, a VOM, and assorted wires (including jumper cables).... Im thinking about looking into getting belts that woudl still be tight enough to limp the car without a tensioner in case a bearing were to seize....

How often do bearings fail? What is typical life span? How much is replacement? Is it worth just doing them out of an effort at preventive maintenance?

honestly all bearings should be inspected during belt replacement... You spin each one and if they arent smooth you replace the bearings or as some prefer to do it to replace the whole idler pulley.

I'm positive I am still running original pulley, bearings, etc, on both Q's. Probably a good idea to replace both now? Rough idea on pricing?

Wes,

What is a VOM?

Also, do the bearings need to be removed and replaced by a shop? If so, what kind of shop??

ThanksKen

Since I ocassionally travel beyond flatbed range, I carry a fuel filter, fuel pump, and FPCU.FSM, VOM and Tools.MAF, CAS, ECU, TCUAt least one of every light bulb and fuse including the 40, 80, 100 ampere ones.Spare belts, oil, ATF, coolant, windshield washer fluid, BG44k.

Most technicans at Joe's Fly by Night Automotive repair can be instructed to do the physical parts necessary to save my 58 year old back.

My Q has only been flatbedded once [brake hose] in 16 years and jumped a very few times [3-4 weeks at airport]................never had a flat tire [leaks yes] but never had the spare down..............I got a fresher one from a 96.

Dennis,

Thanks for the list. When would you use the BG44K?

(If someone could do some education, please provide the definitions of the following: VOM and CAS)

ThanksKen K

CAS= Crank angle sensor

VOM= (usually digital) Volt Ohm Meter, referred to as a multi-meter, used to measure voltage, current and resistance.....

I completely understand the desire to take precaution. And, certainly seems that you are making sure to error on the side of safety.

But, knowing your meticulous nature Dennis, I have to imagine that you have each of those parts properly packed, sealed, boxed and organized in your trunk. How much trunk room does that take up? Could I still fit my golf clubs back there?
