Mechanic (not Infiniti tech) said that a rod was loose seizing up, and the engine is shot.

Where can I find a good, used engine?

There is one on eBay at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...33615

Would this work? Mine is a 1995 Q45a. I don't want one of the late 80s, early 90s with the guide problems.

Where should I get the work done?

is there any way to tell from the pic what year range this engine is? Are there questions I should ask him before I bid on this engine? What type of warranty should I be looking for?

thanx

Any Q engine should work... 94 or 95 that is.... Youll need to adapt your PS pump and some other stuff to work with the active...

I would recommend going to T3 and get the full deal engine swap.....

Its definitely a JDM engine... No precats

Best thing would be to ask for the VIN and I can run it and see what year its from.....

I wouldnt bet on a warranty thats worth anything.. if you r/r it while its out of the car, you dont NEED a warranty..

Thanks Elwesso. What do you mean by JDM, no precats?

Also what's r/r? (You can tell I don't speak the lingo, LOL)

I just called the seller. They don't have VIN numbers. It's a jap import and he said they destroy all VIN information when they ship overseas.

Any idea of a roundabout price at T3 to get another engine into this?

Any other physical attributes of the engine that the warehouse, non-tech guys there may be able to identify the year on this one for us?

With T-3, you will get the pick of the litter (they reject more than they accept to r&r and install), and they will repair and replace all the components that need to be done while it is out so it won't $50 and $100 in labor charges after it is installed with faulty or worn components.

Seems a total swap was around $5500, depending on the price of the original engine. Dennis (Q45tech) will post soon.

Hard to find JDM 94-95 engines, they will have to be ordered from Japan or at least LA. There is a glut of the older 90-93 engines.........99% of time what is on ebay...........US and Canada companies.

The CAS and the front vacuum solenoid [usually a temp sensor on EGR] and of course oval instead of dual round intake ports on heads are three differences. Hard to see in pictures.

T3 can find an engine but you'll have to prepay at least $2,000 and it might take a few weeks to get it to Atlanta. We have 3 JDM importers in Atlanta who receive shipments every week. Sea Shipping is 30 days from Japan........air is a week but $1500.

Because of active [extra work] $5500 would be the minimum with resealed valve covers, plenum hoses and new knock sensors.

These engines come with 30 day exchange no labor, why we spend so much R&R time to get it up to where we feel safe in offering a 12/12 k warranty........you must prove to us that you change oil/filter every 90 days......we and shipper install secret serial numbered melt devices to prove overheats which voids warranty.

FYI, T-3's 12mo/12k warranty is the exact same warranty you would receive if an Infiniti dealership did the work, only T-3 is much cheaper (and better). I recommend taking it down to them, it's worth the trip for a Maryland resident.

cweberj30t,

Do you know the owner? I would like to speak with the owner of this car. Anyone know the cheapest way to ship a car like this from midwest area to Maryland?

Q45tech or others,

What is needed to fit a regular JDM engine to a car with active suspension and traction control?

Here's one on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...03249

The engine has not been damaged. It has 136K mileage. The VIN number is JNKNG01D95M302528.

Is there anyway of finding out from the VIN number if it was regularly serviced anywhere?

I am interested in this. The guy said that a lot people want it, but we're all from the East Coast and it would cost too much to get it shipped. I'd be interested in driving out and picking it up if it sells cheap enough to make it worth my while. What types of questions should I ask him? He gave me his phone number and I talked to him on the phone briefly.

I'm concerned that a 95 Q engine would be on its last legs at such low mileage... Are we CERTAIN your engine is dead? Or is there something else going on with it?

Hard to believe the diagnosis of a loose connecting rod in such a well-engineered engine. Have you gotten a second opinion from the dealership?

Thanks AZhitman,

He says that is was oil-starved in the top part of the engine. It was about two-to-three quarts low when I checked it because it started to knock slightly, but I can't understand why it was low. It was only at about 3500 miles since the last oil change, which is a little late, but should it have burned that much oil? I've only had the car since fall and had toyotas and hondas before that never burned oil, so I didn't think to check it and I never got a low-oil warning of any kind.

It has not been taken apart fully, so the diagnosis is from how it sounds and what they've seen so far, but he's a friend and a good mechanic, so he may be wrong, but he wouldn't lie.

I haven't taken it too infiniti because there isn't one in my general area and the engine siezes up, so it isn't drivable. I live in Hagerstown, Maryland. I think the closest infiniti dealer is 50 miles away.

When you or the previous owner didn't change oil 4 times per year.

You don't check your oil at every gas fillup [weekly]?

Doesn't have to burn oil to leak it out.

You would be surprised at how many on the edge of failing cars are sold........the owner or technican noticed something and recommended a quick sell.

Very very few under 150k 90-96Q burn ANY oil.....[more than a pint every 3000 miles or 90 days.

Why we recommend new potential used buyer pull a valve cover as A SPECIAL part of inspection process [the extra $250 spent can save you from buying a mistake].

Sometimes owners rip the oil pan open, then drive with no oil more than a minute or two, then get a new pan and clean them up for sale..........an expert always looks for a new oil pan......since $1000 is not spent for no reason.

yeah, I have the feeling that is what happened here. I just got it in the fall. I put 6K miles on it and have changed the oil 3 times. I found a '95 engine with 70K on it from an online parts dealer for $1175 shipped. They guarantee labor and parts if anything on it is not in satisfactory order.

I think I will have my mechanic put it in for me and then sell the car. I don't have the money to keep this car babied like it deserves to be babied. The transmission is in very good shape. I had the plenum dropped and the mesh filter changed when I bought it. My mechanic said it looked like it had a been done before and it was very clean. I just don't think I can put the money into it year in and out. If anyone is interested, let's talk. Does anyone know a fair asking price to put list it for sale in my local paper? It will need new shocks eventually, but is not very bad currently. The active appears to have no problems and everything appears to be working perfectly except for the engine. A minor problem, LOL. But once I drop in one that has 70K miles on it, what do you guys think the car is worth on the regular market and/or in this forum's market?

I wouldn't pay more the $4,000 for it because of the mileage. The active suspension makes the car much more expensive to maintain if it hasn't been previously well-maintained. The 70k engine will help up the price, BUT it's going to cost you darn near $3,000-$4,000 for your mechanic to do the swap (including parts) and that's if you do it right. Wouldn't be worth it to sell it IMO, swap the engine and keep it or else sell it without putting in an engine and cut your losses.

Agreed with Nick... IF the seats are in good condition, Id buy the car for like $1000 as a parts car...

thanks for the input guys. I'll probably try to sell it through regular channels like the newspaper, and then on here if I don't get any good offers. The seats will be perfect after I get a small rip fixed by a leather shop that my friend owns. He will match the leather panel exactly. I've seen his work. The whole of the interior of this car is pretty much perfect. The exterior, except for the normal few small chips from rocks, etc., is perfect and very shiny. I have to replace the front license plate cover because it's bent a little. This car is one of the nicest I've seen of the 94-96 range and the 1999 Q wheels that I have on it are sweet and aggressive looking.
